Posting for traffic...

Can anyone tell me what this is? It's taking over the garden so I assume it's a weed. It grows to about 60cm high and it's bloody everywhere.

It's a hardy fuchsia.
Take up what you want to, leave what you don't.
For my part, I like them.

Some kind of Hypericum?

Beekeeper1 · 17/05/2019 20:22

It is Hypericum, also known as 'St John's Wort' or 'Rose of Sharon' - a woody shrub which, yes, does spread readily either from underground runners or from seed. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but, it is a pain to eradicate if you don't want it.

VictoriaBun · 17/05/2019 20:25

Yes definitely a Hypericum. Yellow flowers turning into berries. Also known as St.Johns Wort. You will find it pops up all around the garden !

Gingernaut · 17/05/2019 20:25

Second vote for hypericum

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think it was St John's Wort because I've also got one of those, but ithis one stayed as a compact bush (well about 1m across) and the flowers are about 5cm across. The plant I've posted the picture of is everywhere, the flowers are much smaller and it has little berries like tiny blueberries.

I'm going to try and get rid of it, suggestions how to do this are welcomed

Japanese Knotweed?

Haha, I jest! (I have anxiety dreams about Japanese Knotweed!)

Beekeeper1 · 17/05/2019 21:03

There are many different subspecies, some in the form of a compact bush, others which are low growing and spreading in habit. It is a bugger to get rid of and, much as I dislike using herbicides, this may be your only realistic option - time consuming, but if it were me, I would cut it back to ground level stem by stem and, using a small paintbrush, ( also wearing protective gloves please!), paint on a glyphosate based herbicide such as 'roundup' or a brushwood killer. Yes, I know, it goes against

SomeLikeItTepid · 17/05/2019 21:06

There's a good app called PlantSnap that gives the name of a plant if you take a decent photo of it. I've found it pretty useful, especially trying to identify plants before they bloom!

Beekeeper1 · 17/05/2019 21:06

Sorry, posted too soon!! Yes, I know, it goes against good ecological principles, but, on occasion, there is little choice - if you try and dig it out, any fragment of root left behind will regenerate....it is one of THOSE plants. Good luck
