Barefoot accidents

If you're a household where most of you go barefoot, how often do accidents happen? Stubbed toes, things dropped on feet, stepping on something sharp?

I like to go barefoot, but I try to remember to wear slippers in "high risk" situations, such as washing up, where there's always the risk of dropping something pointed!

I'm barefoot as soon as I get home, I'll even take the bins out/hang washing out/other outdoors stuff barefoot.

I rarely hurt myself.

cantfindname · 17/05/2019 19:58

Now the days of bloody Lego are behind us I can safely go barefoot again. Bliss!

Bobbiepin · 17/05/2019 20:00

Practically never but on the odd occasion I do, it hurts!

Samind · 17/05/2019 20:02

Love being barefoot at home!

ASauvignonADay · 17/05/2019 20:04

I have literally never thought about it like that. Usually barefoot but slippers in the kitchen

Livedandlearned · 17/05/2019 20:04

Always barefoot, outside as well and touch wood, I don't really ever hurt myself.

MardyLardy · 17/05/2019 20:07

Dropped knife next to feet a few times, stood on glass and it’s a miracle I have any little toes left.

Hate shoes

megletthesecond · 17/05/2019 20:13

Never.

My dd plays barefoot outside in the park and street too. It terrifies me tbh, but she's not hurt herself or trod in anything all the years she's done it 😫.

jinglet · 17/05/2019 20:14

Does wearing just socks count as 'barefoot'? If so, the worst thing is when I've accidentally trodden on a wet patch of water or chewed up food (we're doing baby led weaning) 😭😭😭

AWhistlingWoman · 17/05/2019 20:15

Go barefoot most of the time at home.

Have never hurt myself but did once step on a snail Sad

I’m always barefoot after winter; it’s never occurred to me to worry about dropping something on my foot while washing up.
I have a small child so I trip on her toys more than I used to but I can’t remember when I last hurt my feet while barefoot

Mokepon · 17/05/2019 20:19

I wouldn't say terribly often in the scheme of things but how sturdy are slippers if you drop a knife on them?Grin
I've broken toes because I have stupidly long ones and they catch on stuff. But they are also useful for picking stuff up. Name change to MonkeyWoman.
Bruised the tops of feet dropping my phone/various stuff.
Stubbed more toes than I can think but never anything proper bad.
Lots of near misses, I'm very clumsy.

cuppycups · 17/05/2019 20:21

I occasionally walk through cat sick with bare feet. That's it really.

mynameiscalypso · 17/05/2019 20:23

I've stepped on wasps twice (while outside). That wasn't fun. Nothing else really, hate slippers and have hard floors so more likely to slip over in socks than anything.

Rangeloaf · 17/05/2019 20:23

What’s the product you’re researching for?

EvaHarknessRose · 17/05/2019 20:24

Dd stood on a tiny splinter of glass once and ended up needing entinox gas at A and E to get it removed.

skankingpiglet · 17/05/2019 20:25

Another shoe (and sock) hater here. Shoes and socks come off as soon as I am home. I wear slippers in the house when it's really really cold, but the rest of time I'm barefoot and have been like this all my life (I'm 35). I do some outside jobs eg light gardening/hanging the washing out barefoot too. For jobs like mowing the lawn I'll wear crocs. Accidents are very rare - I can't remember the last time I had one.

I have recently switched to barefoot trainers for everyday use. I absolutely love them, but have already had a few painful incidents after standing on larger sharp stones lying on the pavements. I'm assuming this is because I normally exercise some kind of subconscious caution when barefoot, but am used to steaming along oblivious when pavement pounding. Hopefully this will happen less often as I adjust to taking more care.
If you are thinking of going barefoot more often OP you may have the same issue whilst your brain adjusts to not allowing your feet to just slap down any old how (tread lightly! Grin ). I highly recommend it though, especially in the garden. The sensation feels nice and I feel more responsive and light without shoes.

Wolfcubisthefemalenominal · 17/05/2019 20:29

I’m always barefoot at home and often in the garden. Broke a toe a couple of weeks ago but generally it’s thorns, splinters, carpet fibres stuck in the foot and an occasional scald/burn

NowYouListenToMeFella · 17/05/2019 20:30

Always barefoot at home. Not too many accidents. Did break a toe dropping a massive heavy Pyrex dish on it and I stood on an upturned plug yesterday. Had forgotten how painful that is.

UselessTrees · 17/05/2019 20:30

DH seems to have trouble remembering where his feet end and regularly stubs his toes on things. Other than that I can't remember any serious incidents.

Poundlandkate · 17/05/2019 20:31

I never wear shoes or slippers in the house and can't think of any time I've hurt my feet. I did step on a slug once though that traumatised me a bit.

wanderings · 17/05/2019 22:02

@Rangeloaf Not researching any product - just curious. I do a job where I visit lots of people in their homes, and I see so many of them where everyone is barefoot. (After all, lots of people on MN say that shoes indoors are unthinkable!) I'm not often barefoot at home - I wear slippers or trainers indoors, but sometimes I have been barefoot in the kitchen, dropped a knife, and thought... that was close!

You said in the first post you like to go barefoot. Now you say you’re asking because you don’t?

maggycool · 18/05/2019 08:53

Carving fork bounced off the kitchen work surface and plunged straight into my (bare) foot one afternoon a few years ago. It was grim! Had to ring an ambulance as leg went in to spasm and couldn't move as the kitchen fork sent shudders when ever I moved slightly.

After a quick x-ray to check it wasn't in a bone, they whipped it out, gave me a tetanus jab and sent me on my way.

I have a photo of said x-ray somewhere. 🤢

wanderings · 18/05/2019 09:32

I like to go barefoot; actually do so, less often, especially in the kitchen. I might get there, and realise I am shoeless; do I want the bother of going to put some on, or take the risk before cooking or washing up?

Ouch @maggycool, that's the sort of thing I'm afraid of.
