Would you get Mirena coil if you were sterilised?

I have horrible heavy periods. Dr keeps on at me to get a mirena coil. My tubes are tied... I dont think extra hormones and me go well together.
But my periods are doing my head in. Heavy and cycle is about 21/22 days long.... I also have horrid pms...I'm 41...
Anyone any thoughts or advice?
Thanks lovelies!

I’ve had the uterine ablation and no period in 4yrs. It’s bloody brilliant, forget the Marina and get this done.

Sounds like it might be worth giving your doctor's idea a try.

MumUnderTheMoon · 17/05/2019 00:01

You could take cerelle it's got the same hormone as the marina coil just set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take it. If it works then you could get the coil.

Hell no - but I was sterilised to stop taking the hormones. Are you seriously telling me that the coil is the only treatment option? More likely it’s the easiest and cheapest route for the doctor. What if doesn’t work is the doctor going to remove it? Plenty of women report that doctors refuse.

DaisyDreaming · 17/05/2019 07:16

If you and hormones don’t get on I wouldn’t and would see if there’s anything else they can do seeing as you aren’t going to have more children. Do they know the cause of them? Would an ablation help or removal of fibroids if you have them?

sunnysunchild · 17/05/2019 14:51

No fibroids found when she examined me, no "cause" as such... just loads of heavy bleeding Confused
The short cycles are a problem too.
I don't like extra hormones as they make me moody and hungry. I think I'm happier without them.
Dr says the hormones in Mirena are small amount and targeted within uterus.

Shes mentioned mirena to me 3 times now .. really pushing it.... Last time she said the only alternative was to get my womb microwaved- I'm assuming she meant ablation.

Tried mefenemic acid and tranexamic acid but made no difference.
It's been going on for years now.
Any more thoughts?

Ablation is the thing.

No way would I have the mirena when already sterilised and intolerant of hormones. I've read so many accounts of it giving awful symptoms and although GPs are very, very keen to fit them it's common for removal to be refused.

As you say they are pushing the quick, (comparatively) cheap option. It's not on.

SentosaCove · 17/05/2019 15:03

I had a coil fitted in Jan. My life is now so much better. No long, heavy periods, no PMS, no horrible depressive moods. I get a period about every 3 weeks for a day and it is so light I just need a panty liner.

Wish Id known about this 30 years ago.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 17/05/2019 15:06

Definitely worth a try. I wasn't doing too well on the Pill, but the Mirena's fantastic. Vastly improved PMT and almost no period at all.

TheClitterati · 17/05/2019 15:07

Merina stopped my periods. It was bliss. Well apart from all the depression it caused - was like life was sucked out of me. But it does work well for some women. Proceed with caution, and keep an eye on your mental health is my advice.

TheClitterati · 17/05/2019 15:10

Dr says the hormones in Mirena are small amount and targeted within uterus.

This is utter bullshit and your doc should know better assuming they are medically trained. Hmm. It's the Bayer line they all repeat.

Of course the hormones circulate via your bloodstream. And as they don't need to transit the digestive tract you often end up with more hormones in your system. Have a google as there are studies backing this up out there.

Omzlas · 17/05/2019 15:16

I've recently been recommended the mirena and I protested about the hormones. I was told that the hormones are released 'locally' I.e. only into your uterine lining, therefore unlikely to affect your mood etc etc. This could be incorrect as the consultant didn't want to help beyond that but that's what I was advised

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 17/05/2019 18:46

I had the mirena cool twice, periods were lighter but bleeding went on months at a time.
