To apply for a new job?

Hear me out. I started a new job on Monday this week. First 'official' job after university (mature student) but it was something that I took because of decent pay, location and amazing flexible working. I also know I'm good at it as it's just one step away from what I did before completing my degree.

Today, I got a job alert for the same company (it's huge but I have a feeling that people do talk) and I really want to go for it. It's a pay grade above the job I just started and a completely different dept which will also help me build up a lot of transferable skills that would be viewed positively by other employers.

DH thinks I'm mad to consider it after only four days in the job, but the job I'm currently in is pretty much top of the scale for progression in this area so there's almost no room for development.

So please hit me with how bad this will look to my very new employer and if it is worth the shitstorm that I may create by handing my notice in if I'm lucky enough to get the job?

What's your notice period now and how long are you in probation?

Di11y · 16/05/2019 21:47

same company? some places have restrictions on applying internally for first few months.

Go for it!

Mmm personally don't think it looks good. Purely because it's the same company. If it was a different one I would say do it but on this occasion I'd say give your role a shot , build up experience and connections and next time it comes up apply

McDougal · 16/05/2019 21:50

Notice period is one month and standard probation is six months. I know they're struggling to recruit at the moment due to a reconfiguration meaning they can only offer contracts until December 2019 so not sure whether that will impact how they'd treat applications?

There are no limitations on applying for jobs as far as I'm aware. Only issue may be that I've come across the post via an external site as it had been advertised internally and they failed to appoint. I'd hope because I'm a very new member of staff, they'll make an exception if this isn't the done thing.

DH was more in the wait and see camp but my concern is that these roles (at this pay grade) don't come up very often as it's an 'in' to this particular area. If I didn't apply for this, another one may not come up for years Sad

Go for it.

DaffoDeffo · 16/05/2019 21:57

Could you discuss it with your manager? Do you think they are the receptive types?

Problem is they can just get rid of you if they want to in the first 2 years with no unfair dismissal and normally notice periods in probation periods are really short.

I think only you can make the call knowing the dynamics of the politics.

If it's a role they are struggling to fill and you think you could do it, you may find they are receptive to you applying but I suspect your department will be more concerned as to whether they can replace you easily.

It also shows you are still looking around that you saw it

McDougal · 16/05/2019 21:59

I really don't know my manager well enough yet to know whether she'd be receptive or not. She jokingly warned me to keep away from the internal jobs page for at least a few months but then she was also very negative about the area I'm in (I think she was honestly trying to give me a heads up to prepare myself for bitching in the office Confused).

I'm even more confused now. Do I approach her and risk her wrath?

OP posts:
McDougal · 16/05/2019 22:02

Also, I know there were several people who were 'appointable' for my current role so I'm not sure whether they could go back to them rather than having to advertise etc.?

OP posts:
mistermagpie · 16/05/2019 22:11

You really don't know the dynamics and culture of the place yet, and who knows who, which might be important for either job. If it was an external job somewhere else I'd say go for it, but in this case I'd leave it, especially as your boss has already jokingly told you not to.

McDougal · 16/05/2019 22:21

Most people seem to be telling me what my husband told me so I suppose I should leave it. I'm already sad at the missed opportunity Sad

My company actually has a warning on internal job adverts to the effect that you have to pass probation in your current role before becoming eligible to apply for a new role.

As this was an external ad check any.of the internal job ads to see if there's similar wording.

That could make the decision for you and you won't be wondering "what if..."

SleepingStandingUp · 16/05/2019 22:48

I'd apply....

McDougal · 16/05/2019 22:50

Part of me is wondering whether I could plead ignorance to a certain degree as it is an external ad...

I'll have a look at the internal jobs board tomorrow and see if I can suss it out. I'm tempted to see if I can catch my manager and propose a hypothetical situation to gauge her reaction. I'm sure she'll know what I'm trying to do but I'm just trying to think of ways around it all Grin

therearenogoodusernamesleft · 16/05/2019 23:01

If someone from another department applied for a job within my department, I wouldn't give it a moment's thought and I wouldn't speak to their manager. All I need to know is if they can do the job and have passion for it.

Do check other internal adverts for any clauses, but you clearly really want it! The risks of applying seems low.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/05/2019 23:05

You wouldn't be allowed in my company. Well, you could submit your application but it would be declined once they saw your tenure with the company.

However - if I were you I'd try and speak to the hiring manager. They might be able to do something unofficial and interview you but keep the post open until your probation has ended.

MrsElizabethShelby · 17/05/2019 06:40

Oh op you only live once! Try to find out any rules, maybe call HR or recruitment and ask?

If it's really the sort of place where they value you so little that they would sack you for trying to place your skills in a better suited part of the company I wouldn't want to work for them anyway!

But it then our place is mad on development and recruiting people not roles so I may see things from a rose tinted perspective.

McDougal · 17/05/2019 06:46

Okay, so my plan is to ring HR today (and ask for confidential advice so it hopefully won't go any further) and scope out what the situation would be if I did go for it.

It would be such a shame to pass the opportunity up, even the interview to experience, that I think I might just have the bite the bullet and risk upsetting a few people.

I'm only on a temp contract until December so I'm hoping they'd take that into account when looking at movement in the organisation too.

Keep the opinions coming though. It's really good to have different perspectives!

OP posts:
McDougal · 17/05/2019 17:54

I applied! On the advice of the recruiting manager and HR who didn't seem fazed in the slightest so I feel like I was worrying over nothing.

Just updating in case some other poor soul finds themselves in a similar dilemma Smile

Let us know how it goes. Good luck

McDougal · 17/05/2019 21:58

Thanks, Made. I'm meeting the recruiting manager on Monday so here's hoping I engage my brain before speaking Grin

OP posts:
MadeForThis · 06/06/2019 23:10

How did it go?

McDougal · 11/06/2019 22:02

Went for it, got an interview and...I'm first reserve as was 'just pipped to the post'. They've got more roles coming up and are keen to meet to discuss them so it's all very positive (despite not getting the job Grin).
