How much school uniform?

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/05/2019 21:33

For reception ? DC starting in September. We've just received the school uniform info. £10 For a sweatshirt. There are polo shirts, sweat shirts, cardigans, coats, bookbags. I know we don't need everything logo'd. I do have a DC2 that can be passed down to.

We've just got a cheapie coat from Asda or Tesco, three pairs of trousers, five polo shirts, two school sweatshirts and two none-logo ones, and five pairs of socks.

For pe, two T-shirt's a pair or shorts and pair of joggers.

We've never run out but saves us constantly washing stuff during the week when we're both working.

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/05/2019 21:38

God I hadn't even considered PE!

My eldest started reception last year. I bought uniform for 4 days (since they have forest school on the fifth 😀).

I bought one official school cardi, and the remainder as plain navy (since my daughter said the school was itchy). We've since inherited some more school ones. See if your school pta runs a 2nd hand uniform shop.

I bought Asda jersey style pinafores which have lasted all year- really please with them. £5 each. Sainsbury plain cardis were 2 for £5, they've faded, but are still fine. M&S shirts. And Sainsbury summer dresses.

Everything seems to come home with whiteboard marker on it, which doesn't wash out 😬

I buy all DC uniforms from Asda. £3 for a jumper, £3.50 for two polo shirts and £4 for trousers. I can get a whole uniform for the same price as one jumper from the school.

I have five of everythng for both DC so I don't have to worry about washing, drying and ironing it all overnight. Youngest only does half days (nursery school) and still comes out filthy.

jazzandh · 16/05/2019 21:43

How messy is your DC? Neither of mine were, so we had 5 polo shirts, 2 pairs trousers or shorts and two sweatshirts. They rarely needed the spares.

DeathMetalMum · 16/05/2019 21:47

Two packs of three polo shirts - one or two always end up stained with whiteboard marker. Hmm The coloured polo shirts for PE only come in packs of two (asda or Tesco) so we end up with two usually the same with shorts. Singles are usually more expensive for some reason.

Other uniform - have Dd's and try tend to have enough for a full week of everything - mainly thanks to hand me downs from nice. But it makes life so much easier. We do a midweek wash anyway which is helpful as we don't spend the entire weekend sorting washing. I find the polo shirts do shrink in the drier so try and avoid it.

We have bought LOGO cardigans but dd's prefer the plain supermarket ones so I won't be buying any more. They are better quality and wash well, but I can get two or three supermarket ones for s similar price.

Mac47 · 16/05/2019 21:55

2 skirts, 2 cardigans and at least 5 polo shirts. Mine trashed them with white board pens. This bothered me at first but by the summer term I sent her in in washed, scribbled on tops , unless they were truly wrecked.
Don't leave it till August to buy as stuff sells out fast, esp if you have a dd who needs a summer dress, struggled to find one some years in her size. Get school shoes before last week of August, it's hell. Label everything well and still expect to lose some bits forever.

Sparrowlegs248 · 16/05/2019 22:09

Currently, REALLY messy. Can't wear a jumper twice.

My son is a scruffy bugger and comes home filthy. I’m sure he just rolls around in muddy puddles!

Means he needs a clean pair of trousers every day and clean jumper most days too. We have 5 trousers, 6 polo shirts (and a pack of spares to replace with when they get all stained), 4 jumpers

PE - 2 shorts and 2 t-shirts, jogging bottoms and zip up top. White trainers.

Jumpers are the only thing with logo on.

IronManisnotDead · 16/05/2019 22:47

Please do not let the school fool you into thinking you have to buy all the uniforms with their logo on it, because you do not.
George at Asda are fabulous, and cheap, because believe me you will buy lots of replacements for all the lost uniforms over the next few years, even if they are marked!

I think the cost of official logo uniforms from one supplier is outrageous.

happypotamus · 16/05/2019 22:48

We have to have expensive logo cardigans. I bought 3, one to be worn, one to be in the wash and one to be drying (they can't go in the tumble dryer, that would be far too helpful). It is very annoying having to be washing one nearly everyday but I can't afford more. They are also poor quality and didn't last to hand DD1's on to DD2 who will start in September. I expect all clothes to come home dirty everyday in reception. Shirts and dresses/ skirts tended to come in packs of 2 so I ended up with 4 of each. I didn't get summer dresses because they are only allowed to wear them until half-term so it is a waste for just a few weeks. They only do PE once a week so one t-shirt (expensive with a logo), one pair of shorts, one jogging trousers and zip-up top.

MrsPear · 17/05/2019 07:06

Depends if you work or not. I’m an unemployed housewife so the children have three sets of uniform each - so three trousers from next (skinny fit for eldest and standard fit for youngest), three school polos and three school jumpers. I wash and iron on a Wednesday and Sunday. Remember you are buying for them to grow into.
School socks - one pack of black for youngest and one of grey for eldest.
One school coat - not expensive but waterproof. Regatta outlet is a good shout.

Book bag - ours were always trashed and got holes. We have backpack kids size.
PE kit - shorts, t shirt and plimsolls. Tracksuit for colder months. Plus a bag to put it in - I ordered a drawstring with embroidered name on. Not all schools allow drawstring. Ds is in year 4 and still uses his from reception - only thinking of changing as it’s getting a bit small.

Water bottle - cheap and cheerful Sainsbury’s one.

Last thing label, label and label!!!!

DonPablo · 17/05/2019 07:11

I buy five of everything because they come home filthy and I cba to do a mad mid week wash. A tip I was given though was only buy one logod top so if they go in a school trip and ever get lost or separated they can be identified as belonging to the school. So that's what I do!

Do not buy anything precious... Ime it comes home covered in yoghurt, pva, paint, glitter and the velcro on shoes comes home covered in hair and the carpet in the classroom!

Lolly86 · 17/05/2019 07:12

DD is coming to the end of reception. I bought 2 logo cardigans which have worn really well and will fit next year for some time I should think. 3 logo polo again have worn well and still fit fine, 3 plain polos from sainsburys which have worn really well, 2 pinafore dresses from sainsburys also great condition and have been worn much more often then her plain skirt from sainsburys. She is now living in summer dresses, again sainsburys really good quality and wear well. Cheap t shirt shorts and plimsolls will do her for next year too.
I wont bother with the logo t shirts again probably ad she spends so much time in her pinafore you dont see logo anyway!

Equimum · 17/05/2019 07:21

We have four pairs of trousers, 2 Logo polos, 4 plain polos, 4 sweatshirts, 5 socks. As trousers/ sweaters can go in with any coloured load, I can always get ones worn at the beginning of the week ready for the end of the week.

We ended up with three school hats as these constantly went missing. We only have one if everything for PE, as PE kit only comes home on a Friday.

My top tip would be to buy a cheap and easily washable coat. Things do go missing very easily and my son was co startle comjng home covered in mud. We got a very basic coat from sainsburys that dried over night next to the radiator.

Fingerbobs · 17/05/2019 07:25

You could also see if the school do any kind of second hand sale - ours is part of the school summer fete and there are masses of logo sweatshirts and all other uniform going for a couple of pounds. Useful for spares if nothing else.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 17/05/2019 07:27

We had five of everything in Primary. Clean each day and could all be washed together. I don't have enough to wash every day so waste of resources.

Some of the trousers were fit for passing onto friends but jumpers, polos etc quickly fade to so looked scruffy after a while.

Allyg1185 · 17/05/2019 07:35

I buy all ds uniform from Asda. We have 3 pairs of trousers. 5 white polo shirts and three jumpers. Shorts, t-shirt and gym shoes for PE and black shorts for hot days at school. Every year the school tries to push the logo uniform and every year 90% of the parents don't bother

Patchworksack · 17/05/2019 07:36

We have enough for 5 days so I don't have to wash midweek. It is a rare day that a jumper comes home in a state it could be reworn! Our logo sweatshirts seem pretty hardwearing, mine have been handed down through 2 children and there are always plenty in the uniform shop which sells logo items for £1 and non-logo for 50p. Uniform just gets trashed in YR, they all look like urchins at the end of the day.

DelurkingAJ · 17/05/2019 08:05

I agree re reception trashing their clothes. And also try 2nd hand shop...ours is £1 for logoed jumpers which do last. Strangely the logoed polo shirts have lasted much better than the supermarket ones (although all are stained). Stains do not matter. There’s a display in our reception classroom explaining this to parents!

Snausage · 17/05/2019 08:11

DS starts primary in September. I've already stocked up on grey shorts (second hand) and trousers (new) from eBay, as well as some new white shirts (also eBay!). He'll have something clean for every day to avoid a midweek laundry panic.

School jumpers/cardigans must have the logo and new cost almost £17! They also have a specific navy checked shirt for summer which isn't cheap. I am hoping to find second hand bits at the summer fete in June, but will no doubt have to buy some bits new.

PE t-shirt has to be one with a logo, and school colour socks for outside sports, too. Shorts and plimsolls will be from the supermarket.

I have already bought a couple of coats in dark colours (as per uniform policy) on eBay. Second hand but in amazing condition and big enough to see him through for quite some time.

Will wait a couple of months to get school shoes.

PeonyTruffle · 17/05/2019 08:19

2 x trousers, 3 x logo school jumpers, 5 shirts, 2 x ties (yes my 4 year old wears a for Every day) and 5 x socks.

PE is the school t-shirt and red shorts plus plimsolls that stays at school and comes home at the end of each half term for washing.

I was frantically washing everything at the start of term so he looked pristine every day, now I'm a bit more lax and most school stains come off with a baby wipe for rewear the next day 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣
