How to dispose of spoiled freezer food after a power cut?

We've just had 25 hours without power. As soon as it was restored, I went scuttling out to the freezer to see what state stuff was in and it's not great. The ice cream is clearly sloppy, the ice cubes are damp, my batch cooking is soft around the edges (all that time & effort!), the meat has some liquid in with it.
Some things like veg, fruit & ice cubes I will salvage but the meat & other things have to go I think. But how? We have a food collection weekly but this is much more than that could take and it will be a complete faff to take everything out of the packaging to put it in the food waste bin and it doesn't go until next Wednesday; we have a general waste collection every fortnight but that was collected yesterday and I'm worried it will get pongy & attract vermin if I leave it in the bin until then. Do I take it to the dump? I am worried about being told off by the dump police!
We will eat as much as we can over the next day or so but other plans mean we're not around much.

You can usually claim the cost on insurance!! Not sure what to do with it though!

FiremanKing · 16/05/2019 20:08

Take it to your main tip. Our smaller tips wouldn’t take it but the larger ones do.

Put it in your general waste bin if you can’t fit it in your food bin. It will
It go long and attract vermin
By Wednesday.

Why don't you cook the meat and then freeze when cooked? I don't think it needs to be binned. Batch cooking just stick in the fridge and use as much as you can over the next couple of days maybe.

moggle · 16/05/2019 20:16

If you have the space, and can clearly divide it from new food, i would leave in the freezer and put it in the waste bin a bit at a time? But then I do try and avoid trips to the tip at all cost...

pastabest · 16/05/2019 20:18

I would salvage some of the batch cooking by thawing and eating over the next couple of days.

As long as it's remained cold just a bit thawed round the edgesI would probably refreeze most of it too - possibly not fish/prawns etc but anything like bread, whole joints of meat, tomato based batch cooking etc I would.

The ice cream is probably a gonner though as that won't refreeze well.

Bag it up in thick/double bin bags, and store in the now working again freezer until the main collection day. That way there are no smells, leaks, vermin.

I volunteer for a wildlife hospital and sometimes we get donations of meat from people who have had a freezer defrosting issue and can't/don't want to consume all the defrosted meat. We - the charity - and the animals are always very grateful. Just an idea if you have any wildlife hospitals/charities near you rather than throwing it away.

I would finish defrosting the meat and cook it then refreeze, batch meals would be used the next few days. As GamerC said.

My power tripped out while I was on holiday. I don't know exactly how long it was off, but it was several days, and during a heat wave. The smell from the freezer was indescribable.

I turned the power back on, let it all refreeze to kill the smell, then double bagged it all in bin bags and drove as quickly as legally possible to the tip before it started to thaw again.

Yours probably isn't that bad, but it worked really well so I thought I'd share the tip anyway.

peanutbutterismydownfall · 16/05/2019 21:31

Thank you for all of this. Such as simple thing but I really didn't know what to do. I have been through it all and sorted it out so the top drawers are now full of food to keep & the bottom ones full of food to throw when bin day next comes around.
There's some sort of wildlife hospital a few miles away but I can drive past it next week so will call them first & see if they want anything.
