What are your 4 year old's favourite books?

My DD soon to turn 4 needs some new books. We live abroad so reading and books are really important to help her develop her English and the selection in the local library is very small. I tend to buy in big bundles when we go back to the UK and bring them back over with us and I'm putting together an Amazon basket now to collect on our summer trip.

Could you suggest any gems that your 4 year old loves (and you also like)?

Oi Cat, Oi Dog, etc etc it’s quite irritating to read but my mam said that Oi is important in phonics and son loves this series.
Anything Julia Donaldson of course.
You Choose, Just Imagine, Just Imagine in Space
David Walliams one’s which are aimed at younger
Sue Hendra is also excellent.

Also he has inherited his big brother’s Usborne See Inside books and adores them even though they are a little too old.

Some of our recent faves
I saw Anaconda
Three little monkeys by Quentin Blake
Some of the Alfie ones, were reading Poems for Annie Rose at the moment
Also on the poems from A great big cuddle by Michael Rosen is fab.
Zog by Julia Donaldson, have to say though not a fan of some of her other stuff, bought Tabby McTat the other day and didn’t like it

The Enchanted Wood
Fantastic Mr Fox
Sophie and the Snail by dick King Smith.
Lots of Richard Scarry which aren't storybooks but go down a storm at this age as they love to show off how much they know. There are a few Scarrys that are multilingual as well - we have one in English/German/French.

I have a 4 and 5 year old and they love
You Choose
Miss Honeys Hat
Gingerbread Man
Funnybones
Tiger Who Came to Tea
Jack and the Beanstalk
All the Julia Donaldson (Snail and the Whale, Squash and a Squeeze Stick Man etc)
They also love non fiction esp Usbourne Look Inside lift the flap books or anything to do with Sharks or Volcanoes or Space.

Haha no worries, good representation of girls and women is definitely something I'm interested in.

We've been reading some Roald Dahl (Enormous Crocodile and The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me, Fantastic Mr Fox) and he is certainly very male-heavy, although they are terrific stories of course. I'm itching to get into Pippi Longstocking with her, but previous attempts have shown it is still a bit too much above her level.

I'm also interested in general in books with rich vocabulary and good quality English, as obviously she gets way less exposure to the language than a child in the UK would get. Thanks for all suggestions so far, I'm looking them up on Amazon!

The Giant Jam Sandwich

They’re all rhyming books actually.

Hairy McLary books
You Choose - great for imagination
Magic Faraway Tree
Zog and Zog and the Flying Doctors
Quentin Blake’s Cockatoos book ( good for numbers)
Mog the forgetful cat

That rabbit belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell or My Naughty Little Sister by Dorothy Edwards

NorthernRunner · 15/05/2019 23:14

Any of the little people big dreams collection!
My dd particularly loves the Rosa Parks one and I can’t tell you the sense of pride I had when she announced that “we are all the same aren’t we mommy, doesn’t matter if we have different skin” 💙💙💙

DD1 is soon to turn 5. Over the last year all those mentioned above have been popular. In addition Dr Seuss is very well loved. She also enjoys listening to poetry, which often contains a gloriously rich variety of words. Tonight we read a few from 'There's an awful lot of weirdos in our neighbourhood', but 'Don't put mustard in the custard' is also popular.
More recently she has discovered the Happy Families series and The Jolly Postman books. We have a lot of Allan Ahlberg!

Enid blyton and Ronald Dahl were good calls by pp's

ElspethFlashman · 15/05/2019 23:33

The Cat in The Hat is very popular here. The English is very simple and repetitive but really rhymes well and it goes at an exciting pace.

NuffSaidSam · 15/05/2019 23:58

Adding another vote for:

The tiger who came to tea

All the Hairy Maclary and Slinky Malinky ones (great range of vocab in those)

You Choose and Just Imagine (they have very few words, but the point is to spark discussion so you can use as much variety of language as you like!)

Naughty Little Sister

Any Quentin Blake ones, we like the Mrs Armitage ones.

Cops and Robbers

Pants and More Pants

Shark in the Park

The Little Red Train series

Duck in the Truck series

They love Mr Men and Little Miss (but I hate them!)

The Alfie books by Shirley Hughes are fabulous, as are all books by Shirley Hughes.
