Will cycling just 5k ish a day get me fitter? And anyone new to cycling?

I've treated myself to a new bike and it's hardly a racing one Grin It's the Pendleton Somersby because I've not ridden for a few decades and even on testing it a little up and down the aisle in Halfords, I was decidedly wobbly. Will this improve?

Anyway the plan is to use it for 5 or err maybe 10k (yeah right) at a leisurely pace. Worth doing?

@ShirleyPhallus I know. I'm not interested in changing my shape though. Well it'd be nice of course but I know that cycling won't do that. All I'm interested in is whether it'll get me a bit fitter

I have just cycled 9 miles according to google maps .
Please can i go to the chippy for my tea ?

Good god, yes you can! And have dessert too

I was quite impressed with my 2 and a half miles just testing the bike out today. Grin I'm aiming for 10k tomorrow as almost 5k was somewhat easier than I imagined

Hurray! Hopefully you won't discover that you have bruised undercarriage when you leap on the saddle tomorrow.

Strava is a blessing and a curse.

I am trying to get the top women's speed for certain places I cycle Grin

I will get it!

I've got a Pendleton! It's a lovely bike but I'm not sure how well made it is. I've had to have both of the gorgeous cream tires replaced, and at my last service i had £90 of repairs that needed doing Shock
I cycle everywhere (no car) and absolutely love it, not sure how much fitter it makes me though; i still need to do other exercise every day to feel good.

Sup3rCooper · 19/05/2019 15:09

@Minesril oh noooo re the tyres being replaced. How disappointing. I suspect you're clocking up quite some mileage a week though?

I've managed 7k since yesterday afternoon. Grin

It's OK, black tires actually go better with the bike (red) and i know they're good tires. I think i do about 40 miles a week.
