Hobby that I can sign shy DS up for so he can make new friends?

We're contemplating a move from one part of London to another. I was thinking I'd like to sign DS up for some kind of activity in the new area, before we move, so he'll get to know a few kids there, and make it an easier transition.

But he's VERY shy, so I am not quite sure what sort of thing to do. He's in Year 1.

Anyone got any tips on what activities are good for shy kids?

What does he like doing?

We have a few shy kids start in my beaver scout group & I love watching them come out their shell & make new friends. I find the mixed programme and combination of structured activities and games really help, along with a routine for starting/finishing the evening as they know what to expect and generally will try new things when it’s towards a badge!

Beavers has been great for DD1s confidence. She has just moved up to Cubs, and a couple of weeks ago she went off to District Camp and had to work in a team with Cubs from a massive area... And she had a great time. I can't imagine her doing that last year!

I encouraged my shy child to go to Drama classes - it did force her to talk to others! She still loves it many years later.

What activities does he enjoy now, OP?

Beaver scout! Didn’t even think of that! What a good idea. Love the idea of drama, too. Although he’d probably hide in the corner for the first few!

He loves Lego - anything building, really.

Another vote for Scouts and youth theatre.

But be prepared to try s few of each until you find a fit.

I came on to suggest Beavers too.

Don’t worry - the teachers will encourage him and make sure he joins in - he won’t hide in a corner (experienced drama teacher here, have taught many many underconfidnet children, drama is fantastic for confidence and communication. Have only had one child in about twelve years who point blank would not join in. All the others I’ve always managed to win round!)

Lots of London libraries (or at least the ones in my area) run Lego clubs, so maybe look into that?
