When was the last time you used a phone box?!

I tried to yesterday after leaving my phone at home.

None of them worked, they were either vandalised or emergency calls only. I tried 5 different boxes, have they been decommissioned to only take emergency calls now?

Surely they are only used to pee in?

RosaWaiting · 15/05/2019 11:32

well I thought maybe some people might use them to make calls from their mobile when it's raining Grin

my sister had to try to use one at a major train station recently, none of them worked. I imagine when they stopped working, years ago, none were repaired.

i can see the argument for having some as if your mobile is stolen/doesn't work/you were on Virgin mobile yesterday etc etc you would need a phone, but who is going to pay for that?

Tiredmumno1 · 15/05/2019 12:42

About 5 minutes ago, when I changed into my superhero outfit Wink

TrixieFranklin · 15/05/2019 12:42

I don't think I ever have

pink412 · 15/05/2019 12:43

2002 To shelter from a torrential downpour.

BertieBotts · 15/05/2019 12:45

I used one in about 2011, I can't remember why now, but I remember walking down the road to get to it.

TheInvestigator · 15/05/2019 12:46

I stood in one for a photo last year when I was in London and it smelled like pee

BertieBotts · 15/05/2019 12:46

I remember using them to text in about 2006! It took forever but was cheaper than calling if you only needed a message to go one way.

Riverviews · 15/05/2019 12:48

Around 1998. After that I got a mobile

managedmis · 15/05/2019 12:50

At Christmas in Heathro. Flew back to the UK and had to call my parents.

ScreamingValenta · 15/05/2019 12:50

2007

DH used one last year, though.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 15/05/2019 12:52

1999 when the ones in Brighton could send emails.
I could email DH at work.

Not a phone box but I has to use a pay phone in Morrisons a few years back because I realised after I’d already paid for my full weeks shop that I’d left my phone at home and needed a taxi... I suspect that was the last time.

Actual phone box probably early noughties.

Damntheman · 15/05/2019 13:45

I remember it very clearly. I tried three different phone boxes on the day of the tube bombings in London to try to find out wtf was going on. Was in the middle of it all without being close enough to anything to actually know anything apart from a few coppers telling me to not go 'that way' (all the way into Bank, I believe they had a false report of a potential bomb there). None of the phone boxes worked then, but they might have been shut down at the time to avoid a panic, my mobile of course wasnt working. I didn't find out anything until I'd managed to get back to my flat in Stepney (from Bank, having had to walk through Bethnal so it took a while).

purplecorkheart · 15/05/2019 14:20

2000 when in Uni. I was studying late in library and promised someone I would phone when I got back to my accomdation as a few girls had been assaulted in the area. The vodafone network was down so I used the phonebox outside

PristineCondition · 15/05/2019 14:22

1999binthink I kissed Robert Snedon in one, he felt my boobs.

We were both wearing those poper adidas tracksuits

Bubblysqueak · 15/05/2019 14:31

As a phone box to make calls...never as a library to exchange a book, yesterday .

OhMsBeliever · 15/05/2019 14:31

2010ish. I took the dog for a walk, forgot to take my phone and came across a group of men beating another man up, so ran to the phone box to call the police.

That phone box is gone now.

Iwantacookie · 15/05/2019 14:42

Not a clue. I couldn't even tell you where one is in my town tbh

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 15/05/2019 14:45

Phone boxes not only full of wee.....My ever curious then 9 year old DS first encountered the titty pics used by sex workers in a phone box on the Euston Road, Central London. His vocal delight in discovering these made more than one passerby snigger to themselves.
I put all sorts of web blockers and parental controls on the pc only for him tosearch out every phone box for photos naked women. He has old style Asperger's so I'm treading a fine line between paying no attention to him/them and using it as a springboard for conversations around why women sometimes put photos up like this. And no DS, I haven't used phone boxes like this. His 11 year old mind just spun out when I tried to get the conversation back i
Onto using boxes to phone Directory Enquiries in a box and then dialling a number, instead of Google and mobiles.
Another distraction from titty pics is to discuss the TARDIS and police boxes.

Around 1996. Me and my friends from down my street used to memorise 0800 numbers from adverts and spent hours amusing ourselves making nuisance calls. We were of primary school age at the time I hasten to add!

The phone box in my village is an old red one and has been converted into a book exchange.

ClashCityRocker · 15/05/2019 15:03

I can still remember the number for the sex helpline from my days as a juvenile prankster.... Now that is sad. It was 0800 282 930.

We used to hang around the phone box pre-mobile phones as a meeting place. It was handy because you could ring the number and see who was about.

I think I last used a phone box in the early noughties.

Floralnomad · 15/05/2019 15:06

1987 , my car started emitting smoke from the dashboard on my way home from work and I stopped to call my dad for help .

KatherineJaneway · 15/05/2019 18:03

@SciFiScream

Grin Yes I love Janeway (and Voyager.) Nice to hear from a fellow fan.

The last time in the UK it was around 2001, as I got my first mobile in 2002 when I was 12.

I think the last time I ever used one was in Spain to phone my mum when I was 17. Calls to a different country from your mobile were still expensive at that time Grin
