That is all I need to say on the matter

Property woes yes you are right. I’m trying to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as I can. Food items from overseas are a big part of the ‘reduce’ bit, and I guess that means not having chocolate (sob!)

I posted this on another thread but I am happy to be corrected - at the orangutan part of the zoo they go out of their way to promote sustainable palm oil because while non sustainable palm oil is bad, sustainable palm oil is produced without destroying the rainforest and it is the most environmentally friendly because it takes a lot less space to yield the same amount than other oils such as almond etc. I’ve also read it is important to buy sustainable oil to ensure the farmers keep producing it rather than companies going back to non sustainable palm oil.

madeyemoodysmum · 15/05/2019 15:27

If that’s true then manufacturers need to clearly label product with sustainable so we can make informed choices.

My dd watched the documentary at school this week and I hope all schools use it so as many young people as possible are informed

The sustainable palm oil is a bit like Manuka honey.

What is sold seems to be many times what is produced.

Also with demand going up rainforests continue to be cleared. How can that be sustainable?

Sorry, I'm not buying it.

ChopinIn10Minuets · 15/05/2019 15:54

I don't like palm oil because it tastes crap, 'sustainable' Hmm or not. I can't promise not to buy anything containing it because it's in so much, but I don't knowingly choose it. The sooner they change it the better.

Fumnudge · 15/05/2019 16:00

What have they replaced to include palm oil, anyone know? Is it butter, or less milk?
Just wondered regarding the taste but also dairy farmers and their livelihood?
I would happily pay more, and have done, for a quality, nice tasting product, sustainable ingredients, etc (I think I've gone off all chocolate though, don't particularly like Aldi choc either Shock)

I've been getting these for a while because of the palm oil. The red box is milk chocolate only, and the gold box has a selection of flavours. They're much nicer than Lindor, and cheaper too.

DontCallMeShitley · 15/05/2019 19:25

There is a lot less chocolate in chocolate these days. Less milk, cocoa solids.

I found some chocolate coated raisins in Waitrose the other day, no palm oil, but rapeseed instead.

MadameGazelleIsMyHomegirl · 16/05/2019 12:31

I met someone who works in the chocolate industry who said that manufacturers now remove the cocoa butter and sell it on to other high-end product manufacturers for a profit, and replace it with palm oil in their products to make it cheaper. Cadbury’s was one of those he mentioned.

ChopinIn10Minuets · 16/05/2019 14:15

Rapeseed isn't much better taste wise - it's got a sort of cabbagey flavour about it.
