Jeremy Kyle show - should it be permanently axed?

The Jeremy Kyle show has been taken off air indefinitely due to the apparent suicide of one of its guests.

Is it a 'harmless' but controversial show or is it time it was axed for good?

Personally, I'm on the fence. I don't watch the show (I used to, years ago, but stopped after questioning what I was doing with my life!) and can't stand the show any more. In the show's defence, it seems they have good before, during and after care for the guests and they are scrutinised by three mental health nurses and a clinical psychologist before going on the show. This SUGGESTS to me that they are/were taking responsibility for the welfare of their guests but this man seems to have somehow slipped through the net after being apparently ousted on a lie detector test for infidelity.

On the flip-side of the coin, ITV News have reported that "Tory MP Charles Walker, a vice-chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on suicide and self-harm prevention, branded it “cruel television”."
He said: “I think that the we all should have done more to flag up this type of television, the problems with this type of television.

“When you take highly strung - often vulnerable – people, you put them under a huge amount of pressure.

“Yes it makes good television but it also makes for cruel television as well.”

Is the show preying on some of the most vulnerable people in society? Is it cruel telecision or do guests appear of their own free will, being made full aware of the potential consequences of appearing on the show?

What do you think?

JK also has difficulty with knowing how pregnancies are dated. Women sits there, says she is 6 weeks pregnant, he thinks he has solved it by saying 'well you had sex with him 4 weeks ago, so how can he be the father's

longwayoff · 15/05/2019 10:05

Hurrah!! Gone permanently. No doubt will resurface but for now is 'resting'.

The problem is that the fiancé dumped him because she believed the lie detector results. It doesn't matter that he had other issues going on in his life, if his fiancé dumping him was the final straw that led to his suicide then it can be argued that the show is in part responsible/played a contributing role. This is why ITV have taken it so seriously and taken the show off the air.

SuperPixie247 · 15/05/2019 10:27

He makes my skin crawl and I don't doubt that ITV will slime him into another presenting role before long.

PajamasnoDramas · 15/05/2019 10:35

It’s just been announced that the show will no longer air. Good call by ITV and not before time. On BBC news Royal College of Psychiatrists was quoted as calling the show a ‘theatre of cruelty’, couldn’t be more true, certainly in this case.

This is an article about the woman who was beaten up after being on the show.

Sorry meant to link this one, the woman in question gives her own account. Very upsetting and this was 10 years ago. I don't understand why nothing was done at the time, as is happening now.

DontTouchMyCurls · 15/05/2019 10:42

It's the right decision to axe it permanently. It preys on the vulnerable and ridicules them in front of a million people. Awful

Thesearmsofmine · 15/05/2019 10:44

I’m glad it’s gone. Actually feel a bit sick that many people think their bit of entrainment on a weekday opening is more important than peoples lives. It’s like they don’t understand that it’s real people they are watching.

MarthasGinYard · 15/05/2019 10:53

I'm glad it's gone

Was that Greame still on it?

I thought it was dreadful that he clearly knew how contrived it all was for these venerable folk.

longwayoff · 15/05/2019 11:38

I agree Marthas, Graham knows better and should have withdrawn from this show long ago. Outrageous for a professional psychologist, or whatever he is, to oversee this freak show. He should be ashamed of himself.

Squiff70 · 15/05/2019 12:03

I'm very relieved to hear it has been axed this morning after reading your comments. I was on the fence at the time of posting but had no idea just how much abuse and violence went on behind the scenes - most of it we probably know nothing about.

I exgree it exploits vulnerable people, but overall, JK himself has turned into a vile person and it has been his downfall. When I used to watch it many years ago, I could see JK turning nastier and nastier to his guests, some of whom didn't deserve the vile abuse he hurled at them.

I'm truly sorry that it took the death of one person for the show to be taken off air. What a truly awful programme and I for one am glad to see the back of it.

I always remember an episode years ago where JK was screaming and shouting at a woman who was a bad mother and abandoned her son. The son wanted answers. It became very clear that the poor woman was horribly abused by the son's father and yet JK thought it appropriate to hurl abuse at her.

IHateTrains · 15/05/2019 12:36

I think the original version was okay, but now it preys on the vulnerable. I genuinely think the show has done some good, DNA tests etc, however it's the way he treats his guests. It's like they are trying to become some form of Jerry springer type show.
If reports are to be believed the guy failed his lie detector test, he may have been innocent and his partner dumping him caused his suicide, he may have been guilty of cheating but not fully understood what would happen and the ramifications. Don't forget your never shown what happens to couples, they leave the stage and go into 'counselling', maybe he though that the counselling would resolve the issue and they would carry on.
JK should be banned, it targets people who are poor and vulnerable, JK seems to goad the guests and spin the story to suit his own view. 'put something on the end of it?'. It's 2019 SHE could have used contraception, SHE could have taken responsobility. Urgh the man is awful.

Al2O3 · 17/05/2019 19:19

YES!!

Off with his head.

FiremanKing · 17/05/2019 19:28

Not sure how true this is but I wouldn’t be surprised

Jeremy Kyle show - should it be permanently axed?
Ylvamoon · 17/05/2019 19:41

FiremanKing - that's why I genuinely don't watch any reality show. People are put in a bubble, manipulated, chewed up and spat out the other end. All in the name of entertainment.

FiremanKing · 18/05/2019 00:22

@Ylvamoon

Same here. I only know of reality tv people through stories in the news. I wouldn’t watch any of these awful programmes even with a gun pointed at my head.

gluteustothemaximus · 18/05/2019 00:30

Yes. It shouldn't have taken this long either.

Abhorrent show preying on vulnerable people and their problems for entertainment.

Now a man is dead. Are you not entertained?

An ex producer said they made up the lie detector results. Often they were inconclusive, so they made up the result to create the drama.

Sick and twisted Sad

staydazzling · 18/05/2019 14:27

I think it's time and the right time to stop Jeremy Kyle, I think we've moved on as a society. I hope it ushers in. a new time of exploiting the poor on TV as unacceptable.

staydazzling · 18/05/2019 14:29

However! I will say as a teen girl listening to him telling lower class white women revered by society often to raise the bar and expect better for herself was probably the first many women in that world me included had heard that. was just thinking about it today.

HelenaDove · 18/05/2019 17:01

Looks like the problems ITV have are bigger than what i thought.

Bubblegumgal · 18/05/2019 17:37

Glad it’s gone. Is there anything more depraved than watching a rich old white man hurl abuse at financially vulnerable people, most of whom are often victims of the s**t-show that is the mental health services provided by the NHS & the UK’s education system.
JK should be ashamed of himself.
