Do you know what these babies are? On a tidal estuary, not far from a bird sanctuary area with lots of waders and other water fowl.

I think they are normally scottish , but could be shelducks ? Or are they actually ducklings and perhaps t little geese. Do not live near a tidal estuary so suggestions probably rubbish - sorry.

What adult birds were they with? What did they look like? It's often difficult to ID baby birds as their feathers are so different from adults birds.

They look like cygnets, possibly Bewick swan cygnets. They are v cute!

I couldn’t see adult birds but there are lots of boats about for them to be swimming behind and I was in a rush. I’ll have a proper look when the tide’s in tomorrow. We always have plenty of ducklings and cygnets but i’ve never seen any like these before.

Our cygnets are always grey all over.

I’ll try and get some more pictures tomorrow. I am irrationally excited-partly because my DP is currently sending me pictures of puffins and I am so jealous I could burst!

Oh - & no expert me - could be Canada Geese goslings ? - just because the lovely black markings - difficult to see scale on photograph. I agree with @greatcrestednewt - very hard with young birds fluffy feathers to recognise the adult they will be unless an expert.

BasiliskStare · 14/05/2019 19:04

Also , whilst I do not , my parents live near an estuary & they have flocks and flocks of Canada Geese.

BillywilliamV · 14/05/2019 19:08

I want to see a picture of your husband’s puffins!

BillywilliamV · 14/05/2019 19:09

Yes, well!!

thegreatcrestednewt · 14/05/2019 20:38

Where is your h if he is with puffins? Lucky him!
