Leaving senior role for lesser position to gain new experiences

Does anyone have experience of working in a senior role within nhs (band 7) and left the role to become a band 5? I want new experiences, but it takes having to start at the bottom again.

My gut reaction is no. I’m an 8a- I know I need to get more breadth of experience at that level to get Higher, if you see what I mean. Ask for a secondment into a similar role at that level if possible. good luck!

I've been in the same service for ten years. It doesn't seem healthy to me. But this is how I am able to work my way up.

Hi @ThirtyRoad

Iv been in for 20 years & very recently dropped down.

I love it . Different experiences as you say and my wellbeing is so much better.

I have energy for things I enjoy and my health has massively benefited.

Just to add it's given me so much confidence.

The narrative we tell ourselves is usually that we need the pay etc etc , but the change has now given me the confidence to be applying outside of the NHS , outside of nursing where many of my skills are transferable.

I would never have done this as a band 7. I got trapped into the mindset of " oh but the pension is really good" etc.

And do you find it difficult to not be in a management position? I fit well in my senior role and think I'll struggle being told what to do again Blush

There are bits i miss.

I mean i loved my band 7. I really did.

But when i get a little pang for the things i miss , i reframe it for the things i have gained. Less stress, different learning opportunities. It really has changed my life , because those 2 things had a domino effect on other areas of my personal life and i feel much happier.

In honesty you get respect from people managing you because they value the experience you have . I can empathise with my manager because iv been in his shoes which he appreciates!
