Thinking about longevity (RIP Doris Day) who are or were the oldest people in your family?

My dh's great aunt is hopefully going to make it to 100 in July. She lives in a warden controlled old people's complex and doesn't have daily carers but does have quite a lot of help from family in terms of shopping and cooking and obviously couldn't go out on her own any more. However she doesn't have dementia and isn't in full time nursing care.

My step mother's mother is 96.

My own grandmother died at just short of her 95th birthday (in an old people's home but not nursing home for the last 2 years of her life).

I think there was a male relative on my father's side who lived to 101 and died in the 1980s but I don't really know the details.

My mum In law. She's 94 and totally independent. I love her so much - she cackles and has a fantastic sense of humour. Everything in moderation is her key and she hasn't a mean bone in her body.

Kindness oozes out of her.

My great great aunt was 107 when she died. Couple of other great aunts on a different side got to 101/102 etc. We're pretty long living on many sides of my family.

PortiaCastis · 13/05/2019 21:25

My Gran died at 98 she was still riding her bike and giving out her opinion to the whole village a couple of weeks prior to her death in 2016
Formidable lady who is sadly missed

My maternal side :
Great-Grandad 101
Gran (his daughter) 96
Grandpa 72 (died of MND)
Their siblings were all in their 70s-90s.
My mum 59 (MND)
An Auntie 62 (MND)

Paternal side
Great grandparents not sure. Oldish for the time.
Grandpa 54 (lung disease, miner and shipyard worker)
Gran 68 (heavy smoker).

My dad is 67 and in the picture of health. He's not old at all.

Funny how, when we were young, we thought grandparents and great aunties etc were OLD, but now my dad and aunties and uncles are that age, they're not old at all. :)

iogo · 13/05/2019 21:29

Meant to add, my gran was in brilliant health and driving until 92 but took a fall about 2 months before she died and the decline was shocking rapid from the woman we knew.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/05/2019 21:32

Oldest person in my family was 90. Dh has far more long lived people in his.
My friend who is 83 only lost her Mum recently, she was 107 !

Nowaypast · 13/05/2019 21:37

A plumber I once used's girlfriend's (wife now, I believe!) granny was 108 last time I needed him!

Wigeon · 13/05/2019 21:37

DH’s granny just turned 108 - thought I would definitely win the thread but ShowofHands (great?) aunt is going to be hard to beat! I claim second place on the thread so far though.

She has fairly recently started to get really frail - has 24hr care in her own home, dementia, no memory, sleeps a lot, just recently stopped being able to stand up/walk, but often seems relatively happy.

Iwantacookie · 13/05/2019 21:41

When I was a carer I met a lovely lady who lived to be 103.
In a bizarre twist of fate they lived next door to my grandparents years ago and my dm used to play with her daughter when they were little (back in the 50s)
To actually have spoken to someone who has lived through 2 world wars was such an honour and it's a memory I treasure.

RustyBear · 13/05/2019 21:44

My Dad died aged 102, exactly 100 years after this photo was taken in 1912. He still lived on his own, refusing to come and live with me or my sister and preferring to remain independent with carers coming every day.

My grandfather died when he was 97, he was the most amazing man and I miss him terribly. His sister is still alive aged 103.
My grandma was 89, she fell and broke her leg and unfortunately developed a PE and died a week later. Before her fall she was in great health and probably would have lived to 100.

Mintandthyme · 13/05/2019 21:53

My mother in law and her 4 sisters. Youngest 91, eldest 98.!!

Mintandthyme · 13/05/2019 21:53

Their 5 brothers all died before they were 80 !

magbob · 13/05/2019 21:55

My great grandmother lived to 108! She wasn't happy when her failing eyesight and hearing seriously impaired her quality of life. She died in 1988 and it astonished me that she was at retirement age during WW2!

SamBaileys · 13/05/2019 22:00

My husbands Grandad is 94 and fit as a fiddle.

SneakyGremlins · 13/05/2019 22:04

Grandma will be either 93 or 94 in August Grin she won't say which so I'm assuming 94

Gingerkittykat · 13/05/2019 22:05

My great aunt is in her 90s and spends her life travelling the world. Last I heard from her was last week when she was ice curling in Iceland.

The only slight physical problem she has had was a varicose vein on her ankle a couple of years ago.

I think she will outlive us all!

SirVixofVixHall · 13/05/2019 22:51

Gingerkittykat your great aunt sounds wonderful.

Costacoffeeplease · 13/05/2019 22:56

My grandfather died at 92, my husband’s grandmother at 96. MIL will soon be 89

HerRoyalNotness · 13/05/2019 22:59

Paternal GM died at 92, she’d been living independently, broke her hip in a fall, and didn’t recover.

Not sure about anyone else on paternal side. Maternal side GM died at 54 and GF at 72. Have some aunts and uncles in their 70s now, hope they live for a long time yet

sleepyhead · 13/05/2019 23:04

My grandmother is 101 but she's not enjoying life so it's sad rather than an achievement.

There are flashes here and there, but mostly she's bored to tears and wants her mum Sad

DadDadDad · 14/05/2019 00:06

Based on latest British mortality statistics, 32% of 40 year old women make it to the age of 90, and 2.6% make it to the age of 100. Actual chances are probably better than that because life expectancy is improving over time. (The probabilities are worse for men: 21% of 40yo make it to 90 Sad ).

I got the raw stats from here www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/lifeexpectancies/datasets/nationallifetablesgreatbritainreferencetables

beethebee · 14/05/2019 00:54

My granny is 103 and still lives in her own flat (albeit with help as her eyesight is v bad now).

MadisonAvenue · 14/05/2019 01:12

My Nan was 94 when she died, she was still living independently and enjoyed gardening and baking.

My Dad recently turned 86 and is very active, as is my Mom who will be 84 in the Summer. They’re both very keen gardeners.

stairway · 14/05/2019 02:00

My Grandparents were 95 and 93 when they died and my other grandparents are 97 and 100 but needing nursing care.
