Am I responsible?

So last night I plugged the iron on in the kitchen. The iron was left by the landlord. It tripped the switch. So i unplugged everything and put the switch back up. Nothing is still coming on in the kitchen. I ring the letting agent and they said well you caused the problem so we will see what the landlord says about getting an electrician out. Am I really responsible for paying to sort the problem?

I would say not, if the iron was supplied by the landlord.

Yeah I'd also say no, given the iron was left by the LL. Good luck!

Even if the LL didn't leave the iron, the electrics clearly have a problem if they’re not coming back on after flipping the switch, so it still shouldn’t be your fault. The whole point about trip switches is that once you remove the offending item they should allow you to switch it back on.

Thank you everyone. Hopefully someone is coming out today. Being open plan I’ve managed to use extension leads to plug the boiler (hot water) and fridge in but no cooking facilities. Nice day mind you could always light the bbq!

With letting experience, I would say that one of two things happened when you rented the property. Either the item will be listed in the inventory as something for which the the landlord is responsible, or it will fall under the things which a landlord has left, you may use opr dispose of, but the landlord bears no responsibility. We have done this many times, when white goods for example have been left by a previous tenant, we leave it in case it is useful to the next tenant, but bear no responsibility fo replacing or repairing- it's a bonus freebie and nothing more.

Regardless, if the infrastructure of the properties electrics have been damaged, it needs repairing by the landlord.
