Do you remember everything looking big when you were a child?

And having to stand on things, be lifted up, not be able to reach, having to push hard to open doors, adults towering above you, and seeing everything from a child's level? With your own DCs, do you sometimes have to remind yourself what it was like?

I have a lot of memories of seeing things from a child's height, although occasionally I am surprised if I visit a childhood place and it all now looks smaller.

I remember my first memories standing out on the street outside my house. The road was wide and expansive, the houses opposite had a steep bank leading up to the front door, the alley ways behind the houses were long and wide.

I google earthed it recently, after 30 plus years, and was amazed by how unchanged it is. But I also noticed that the steep bank was a tiny incline and the wide road was in fact quite narrow, with the shortest skinny little alley ways!

I don't remember looking up at people particularly though. Maybe because I'm still vertically challenged and that hasn't changed - haha

I dont remember that as such, but I do remember the year 6 children looking fully grown when I was in reception. They were like adult size to me!

ohbutyoulovescarves · 13/05/2019 08:04

Cornettos definitely seemed bigger when I was little

Wagon wheels and monster munch

My scottish gran lived in a tenement block in Glasgow and as a small child i thought the stairs going to her apartment were huge, went back to Glasgow as an adult (she died when i was 8 years old) and the block is still there looked through the glass and of course the stairs are normal sized stairs but still have the original green tiles and it was nice to be able to stand outside and remember that she lived there

Haz1516 · 13/05/2019 09:34

I remember looking up at adults and them seeming like giants.

sugarbum · 13/05/2019 09:38

I remember just been able to see over the worktop, but only just.

I remember being pushed in a pushchair, with a red cover up thing (it attached to the chair but it had a hood on it so my head was poking through.
I remember the fear of being put on my dads shoulders (he was 6ft 4, so it was very scary!) but being able to see myself in the mirror in the living room when he did it, which wasn't something I could normally do.
But i stopped growing when I was 10, so I guess there weren't that many years of being 'small' although it feels like forever when you're a child.

My nursery school seemed massive when I was at it. Whenever I drive past it now, it is tiny!

Damntheman · 13/05/2019 11:14

I remember my primary school hall seeming MASSIVE. went back in with a niece a few years ago and it's actually pretty tiny..

I also have an absolutely lovely memory of riding on my dad's shoulders. He was 6'4" so I felt like I was on top of the world!

wanderings · 13/05/2019 19:26

I had the same experience of seeing my primary school assembly hall and playground, and thinking how small they looked now.

I too used to ride on my dad's shoulders!

I remember the estate we lived on as kids everyone had really tall hedges. Walked back round that way a while back for the first time in years and the hedges barely reached my shoulders! Felt like a giant Grin.

OriginofSpecies · 13/05/2019 19:52

My infant school building was behind the Junior school building with a path leading from the road up to it.

As a 4-7 year old, the path seemed endless. Such a long way!

Now, whenever I drive past I realise the path isn't really that long, but still quite a distance for little legs Smile.

I remember having my hand held almost vertical by a parent and having to reach up and hold onto the handle of one of my younger siblings' pram (probably one of those old-fashioned Silver Cross ones; I'm sure I've seen old photos of one at my DM's).

RandomMess · 13/05/2019 20:03

Still feel like that now - vertically challenged 😂

Mari50 · 13/05/2019 20:12

Not so much height wise but I drove my dd through the estate I grew up in just yesterday and it seemed so squished, all the houses were really close together and hills that seemed really steep when I was little were just tiny gradients. I was so disappointed...

SeaOtterFluff · 13/05/2019 20:45

One of my earliest memories is visiting my mum in hospital - I must have been about 3 at the time - and my granny lifted me onto the bed. For many, many years I was convinced that hospital beds were massive.

80sMum · 13/05/2019 20:50

Oh yes, I certainly do remember that! I used to go with my mother to the shops. I especially remember Sainsbury's, before it was a supermarket when it was a delicatessen. There were huge marble counters all around the edge of the shop and it was very frustrating not being able to see what was on there!

I also remember not being tall enough to reach the bathroom basin and having to climb up onto the edge of the bath and stand on it to reach my toothbrush.

Blankiefan · 13/05/2019 21:19

I remember standing in the chip shop and not being able to see over the counter. I remember being desperate to be tall enough to see over the counter.

WotNoLoobrush · 13/05/2019 21:39

Standing at the bank counter with my Mum, I was unable to see what was happening. I remember hearing a loud (scary) thump when the cashier was using a stamp.

CuppaSarah · 13/05/2019 21:43

I remember how desperate I was to be able to see the till and packing bit on the supermarket, I thought about it a lot, knowing that the day I could finally see what magic went on up there would be I was a true adult. Then one day I realised I'd been able to see over the top for a while and I wasn't actually an adult at all. I nearly cried right there in Tesco's.

PodgeBod · 13/05/2019 21:46

Yes I went swimming with my Dsis recently and saying how massive swimming pools seemed when we were little. They never have quite the same impact now.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/05/2019 21:58

Giraffes. They were a lot taller when I was a kid. When I first saw one as an adult I was confused about how short they were!

MonkeyfaceThereturn · 13/05/2019 22:06

I would have sworn blind that as a kid we had a proper swimming pool and Olympic sized trampoline in the garden, and a gate at the end that went through to a field.

Dad pissed himself when I told him. It was a toddler trampoline, a paddling pool and a small patch of grass 😢😢

ShitArmBadTattoo · 13/05/2019 22:15

Bloody hell AroundTheWorldIn80Moves how tall are you?? Grin

Dollywilde · 13/05/2019 22:16

Not really but I remember hugging my DM and being near her knee. I find it bizarre that I’m now taller than her!
