A fucking MOUSE!

Excuse the french but... I’ve just walked into my garage to see a little shitting mouse sitting on top of my recycling bag! A MOUSE!

What do I do? Get a cat?

My old cat was amazing at catching mice. Now she’s been gone for a few months, I guess they’re feeling brave.

How can I be sure it will be good at catching mice if I do get one?

Before anyone jumps on me, I wouldn’t be getting a cat just for catching mice. I love cats and miss having one.
But seeing that mouse has freaked me out... I don’t want them coming into the house!

Well yes, a new cat might catch the mice, but also bring them in to the house as gifts (dead or alive) for you 😄

ReganSomerset · 12/05/2019 23:18

Go to a rescue and get an ex street cat. Also ask if any are known mousers.

OhShitItsAMouse · 12/05/2019 23:19

Yuk... yes, I must admit, I don’t miss cleaning up mouse entrails.

But tbh, I think I prefer them dead than alive.

I did read that two cats are better than one when it comes to catching mice (something about rivalry)
Does anyone know if that’s true?
I’ve only ever had single cats

I have three cats. One catches nothing more than crane flies, one takes birds in flight, and the third is a rodent expert. We don't have mice in the house now (we have in the past, farmhouse) but just this week I've had a mole, couple of shrews, couple of small birds... mostly dead. The rabbit wasn't wounded but died of shock.

I'd happily ignore a mouse outdoors, where they're meant to be.

OhShitItsAMouse · 12/05/2019 23:22

I’d ignore a mouse outdoors too... but this was one was far too close to my kitchen for my liking 🤢

I was going to say that if you've got a fucking mouse then soon you'll have lots of little mice Grin

My cat often brings me mice. Sometimes alive, sometimes dead and sometimes only a spleen, half a tail and a patch of blood to show for it Envy

Singlenotsingle · 13/05/2019 07:03

We've had mice set up home twice in chests of drawers in the downstairs bedrooms. They'd probably escaped from the cats at some stage. And once we heard scratching noises inside a leather sofa and there was a FERRET in there!

BrillyPribble · 13/05/2019 07:11

Agree get an adult rescue cat then you are more likely to know its temperament.
We have a rescue cat who was a kitten when rescued, an adult when we got her. She's a teeny tiny wee thing and only has one eye so I thought she'd be no problem and wouldn't be bringing us presents. 🤔 how wrong I was. She's had endless mice, shrews, voles, rabbits and a couple of wood pigeons which were bigger than her. We get deer in our garden and she even stalks those. 😆

TroysMammy · 13/05/2019 07:13

Do you live in a windmill?

MashedSpud · 13/05/2019 07:15

We had a mouse in our flat last year. We set humane trap laced with peanut butter but never caught it.
Our cat stalked it for a few days then it was never seen again. I doubt she killed it (she’s the type who will sit by a spider and watch it scurry along the floor) maybe it just buggered off.

AllGoodDogs · 13/05/2019 07:59

Our cat is a great mouser most of the time. There was one incident where he brought a live one in and released it in to DSs room as a present. DS slept in my bed for 3 nights while I tried all sorts of humane traps for the mouse to outwit me with... I finally caught him inside the duvet cover and managed to get him outside in it. If you live quite rurally and aren't after a "pet" than a farm cat / feral type rescue would be your best bet.

ReganSomerset · 13/05/2019 08:41

Do you live in a windmill?

Good question! If so, it's a massive drip-feed by OP.

After all, a windmill with mice in is hardly surprisin'.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/05/2019 09:01

Found a couple in our garage last wk (garage isn’t accessible via the house) but I’m still being vigilant- loads of traps laid in the garage and bought a mice mesh protector for our air bricks which is where they would go in via

Damntheman · 13/05/2019 11:17

I would have a single cat, they seem to be happier in sibling pairs in my experience :)

I have two. One doesn't catch anything because the fucker picked up a bird so now he has a bell. The other catches a LOT of mice and rats, but occasionally likes to bring live mice in for his brother. Not a fan of the latter there..

Get a cat! Or two.. or you know.. five. Five works too.

OhShitItsAMouse · 14/05/2019 10:41

Why would I be living in a windmill? Confused

Well, I declare!

Gingernaut · 14/05/2019 13:13

A Junior Choice classic that was.

There wasn't a single Sunday that Ed 'Stewpot' Stewart didn't play that track.

Angie169 · 14/05/2019 14:42

Did it have clogs on ? Grin
On the whole I have found ferrets to be much better mousers than cats .
I have owed both nowt gets passed a ferret cos the can get in to much smaller spaces than cats .

A fucking MOUSE!
steppemum · 14/05/2019 17:18

Oh I feel old.
Windmill in amsterdam needs explaining

Sammy867 · 14/05/2019 17:23

I have a cat (Bengal) and a poodle dog.
The cat has never even caught a fly and has no interest in catching anything.
The poodle will catch a mouse and play with it , release it to catch it again or trap it in an area but never hurts it. I’ve had to take many mice off her and release them (completely unharmed) into the forest by ours. Don’t have a clue how she catches them
