You Got Owned - Help

Comefromaway · 12/05/2019 18:50

Just been going through my junk mails and deleting them (I check because for some reason dss school ones go in there) & there is one with the title You Got Owned.

It’s basically a threat to transfer bitcoin to someone as they’ve infected me etc etc and have got webcam videos of me supposedly visiting an adult site.

Now, I’ve never visited any such sites, don’t own a webcam (or even a pc, just an iPad) and so it’s all nonsense BUT

it names one of my passwords!

It’s the one I used to use for everything but gradually over time I’ve replaced it with others and made them different for different sites.

But how did they get it, and what do I do about it?

They got the password because at some point someone else was hacked and they published all the names and passwords online.

PrincessDisneyCarrie · 12/05/2019 18:54

Nothing. Don't worry about it. Its from an old hack of that site you used the password on. If you've changed the password a few times since then and have raised your password security - it's just basically a phishing email.
You could change your password again to make sure - but there's nothing to worry about. I've had three of these - all passwords I used 10 yrs ago...

Yeah I get quite a lot of these but they're all really old passwords so I don't worry too much. (I laugh at the idea they'll send videos of me watching things on the internet to all my contacts - it would be a very boring watch!!)

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/05/2019 19:32

It's a scam. Don't click any links. Delete.

You may get follow-up messages (because you opened it, they know your email address is live). Don't open, delete.

Scam that has been doing the rounds for a while. Ignore it.

I get these. A very old password is quoted that I don't even use any more.

You can check your passwords on this site.

haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords

This website was linked from a BBC article. I’ll see if I can find it.

I've had exactly the same message. Apparently they have watched me masturbating whilst watching porn. They say they've filmed me via the Web cam. I've never watched porn in my life. Nasty fuckers!

I've deleted all their delightful emails.

Hoppinggreen · 12/05/2019 19:55

Don’t worry
DH is an IT consultant and when I got one he did a security overhaul of all our devices, we hadn’t been hacked at all. It’s likely that a shopping site I hadn’t used in ages was hacked and they got a password that way
Besides I have never watched porn

HollowTalk · 12/05/2019 19:55

This is so weird - just talking to my sister on WhatsApp as that happened to her!

gamerchick · 12/05/2019 19:56

They got the password from some oooold site. The password I got was one I used 12 years ago. I also liked the 'you notice I sent an email from this email address to yourself to prove I've hacked your email' one as well. Then the porn/masturbating bollocks with warning of sending video to contacts and bitcoin thing.

Personally I think the idea was pinched from black mirror.
It's bollocks, just delete.

Just delete them

Thanks for the reassurance. Wracking my brains to see if that password is still used for anything so I can change it, if so.
