8 yo has a broken toe. She can't really walk

I am not totally sure how to manage it. She is in pain to walk and can't go far. My instinct is that she shouldnt go to school tomorrow until the pain has subsided a bit. But obviously her brain is fine!

Needless to say it is logistically a nightmare as we walk 10 mins each way to school and no parking near the school so she will have to be super earjly or late, as will her sister. School gates are shut for 20mins at drop off etc.

Anyone got experience of how to manage this situation? How much pain are we expecting? How inconvenient will it be?

Thanks!

It will be fine, I've broken many toes. Ice and rest it today. Splint it together with a neighbouring toe using a plaster. Will be better in a few days.

AnyFucker · 12/05/2019 17:30

If you don't drive then taxi to school ?

Explain the situation and school will arrange for her to be taught in a special classroom

Or, keep her iff for a couple of days

She'll be fine to walk to dchool tomorrow, btw.

SaltSpoon · 12/05/2019 17:32

Special classroom? For a broken toe? What do you mean?

GarthFunkel · 12/05/2019 17:32

Can you borrow a child's wheelchair or crutches from the Red cross ehike she's off tomorrow?

AnyFucker · 12/05/2019 17:33

A classroom on the ground floor so she doesn't have to negotiate stairs. What did you think I meant ?

itsboiledeggsagain · 12/05/2019 17:34

A&E splinted it. They also gave us no advice at all except no PE. I have no idea if she would manage a full day at school I am basically piggy backing her around.

I can drive but we live so close to the school there is no where to park en route. And school lock the gates for the whole of school run time to dissuade parking.

I still remember the time I had to tell DS2's teacher that he'd broken his toe a couple of days before and just to be aware - all while he tore round the playground faster than ever Grin She just commented that it didn't appear to be holding him back much. A day or two beforehand though and he was hobbling everywhere moaning it hurt and he couldn't walk. Kids' toes often heal pretty fast, thank goodness.

itsboiledeggsagain · 12/05/2019 17:35

Her classroom is on the ground floor. School is accessible but big.

I figured she didn't need crutches/wheelchair as thry didn't appear to even consider giving her any

She can use the heal of her foot to walk. Slow and not comfy but she should be able to manage that.

AnyFucker · 12/05/2019 17:36

8yo might be borderline too young for crutches

itsboiledeggsagain · 12/05/2019 17:36

Thanks for comments BTW. I was half expecting some kind of "I hopped around the Sahara on one leg" type responses

Good to know roomba

You dont need crutches for a broken toe, she will just have yo get used to hobbling around, you just walk on your heel instead, you dont need to be piggy backing her around.

Runforthehills754 · 12/05/2019 17:39

Which toe did she break? I broke my big toe and there is no way I could have walked for 10 minutes (couldn't get the hang of crutches). I don't think its supposed to be as bad if you break the other toes.

AnyFucker · 12/05/2019 17:43

A broken toe is very painful and some 8yo's are not very coordinated at the best of times

In a week or two she will be right as rain

elephantoverthehill · 12/05/2019 17:45

Are her shoes ok? I had to wear crocs when I injured my little toe, due the unfeasibly large dressing that was applied by A&E.

HoppityChicken · 12/05/2019 17:45

I broke my big toe - could not put it on the floor at all without some kind of shoe on it (basically it needed the flat sole for support). Called NHS helpline rather than hospital who just said frozen peas and keep it raised as much as possible. So no crutches, boot thing etc. Pain subsided after a few days.

ValleyoftheHorses · 12/05/2019 17:48

Unless it’s the big toe you just use a plaster to strap it to the adjacent toes and ignore. It doesn’t hurt that much.
Veteran toe breaker here- never big toe though

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 12/05/2019 17:48

Ring school early. I imagine that the gates will be able to miraculously open for you to drop her off.

Kidssendingmenuts · 12/05/2019 17:49

I know you said there is no parking, but maybe ring school first thing and explain the circumstances and ask to park out front or in the staff car park x

nutellalove · 12/05/2019 17:50

It really depends on where the toe has been broken... I broke mine right on the joint and couldn't put any weight on it at all. Walk in centre was useless, told me to walk as normal. Which I attempted. And 2 months later it had just got worse. 4 months to heal a stupid broken toe, because the walk in centre basically ignored me as it was 'just a broken toe'.... would get a second opinion from GP if I were you

itsboiledeggsagain · 12/05/2019 17:52

They won't be open as everyone else would just drive in as well. Side issue is I don't know how disabled people manage. I guess they have to get there super early.

I guess I will probably keep her off tomorrow unless she seems a lot better. She will have to go end of the week as I will be at work so she will need to be better by then! Sounds like she might be though which is good news.
