Non-drowsy Antihistamine for 1 year old

My soon to be 1 year old appears to have hayfever. We have some Piriton the doctor prescribed us a month or so ago for a rash he had so I've been giving him that however it can make him drowsy. Its recommended to give twice a day but I've only been giving it at bedtime as I dont want him drowsy in the day but obviously this means hes still having symptoms.

The pharmacist agreed with me that it's better hes playing etc in the day and recommended going to the doctors as they may have a nondrowsy option. The pharmacist only had it for ages 6+.

Ive looked online and can only find a nondrowsy antihistamine for 2 years plus... does anyone know if it is possible to get one for 12 months plus?? I dont want to waste the doctors time but also dont want to leave him snotty and wheezy as he already has inhalers.

TIA

See the GP.
They will know the best medications for the age of your child.

Over the counter only piriton is suitable for his age. I think other antihistamines can be given on prescription but that obviously requires a GP visit.

Also do you know piriton makes him drowsy? Have you tried it in the day? It’s a common side effect but that doesn’t mean everyone gets it.

Sorry, I absolutely don't mean to belittle your legitimate and laudable concern for your child, and I realise I am a terrible person, but I can't get beyond not wanting to make a 1 year old drowsy.

AngelaJ18 I've given him a few days of just the night time dosage but when hes up in the morning hes still drowsy and clumsy from the dose the night before. I will try him with a dosage in the day tomorrow and see how we get on before trying the doctors.

Piriton totally knocked ds out when he was that age (which was great becasue he had chickenpox and was miserable) but I can totally understand where you are coming from.

However I suspect they will just tell you to persevere.

BunnyTeapot · 13/05/2019 15:36

comefromaway it was great when he had the rash and I suspect itll be great when chicken pox hits but I cant have him sleep the summer away 😂

Def see your gp I’m not sure what else they’d prescribe but have more options than over counter
Never had any of mine being drowsy with piriton though maybe it’ll settle down the more he takes it it’s a fairly small dose but could you give less and see if that helps with symptoms but stops drowsiness too?

Comefromaway · 13/05/2019 15:54

Hopefully it won;t be the whole summer. I'm a hayfever sufferer, s is my brother, dad, dh and ds and all of us have different times we suffer. For me, its around March/April time, for dh its later in the summer, it all depends onthe type of pollen you react to.

So usually (touch wood) you are only affected for a few weeks.

BunnyTeapot · 13/05/2019 22:35

kaykay I'm going to try the two doses tomorrow and see how we go. He spat most of tonight's out anyway so hopefully he wont be too drowsy, I'll give him a few days and if he is drowsy I'll see what the gp can offer.

Thank you all for your help x

I suffer with hay fever and I also am prone to feeling very drowsy even if the medication says non drowsy!

I have a one a day tablet that if taken whole, knocks me out.

Soo cut in half and take half in the morning and half at night.

Could you do similar and give half dose in the morning and half dose at night?
