Is it possible to get really fit/toned from home workouts?

I'm doing lots of classes at the moment but resent the time wasted on travelling! I'd like to incorporate some home workouts but do you think they are as effective as classes?

the people who do Shred, did you do it every day?

I gather there was some controversy as JM meant it for every other day but the marketing people made it look like every day....

Mummabear2212 · 16/05/2019 14:34

For those of you that did shred did you just use the you tube videos? And is each level a different day? Desperately need to do something, feel too fat for a gym and need something at home

Purpleraindeer · 16/05/2019 14:35

To be visibly toned you also need to lose fat and for most people they need to diet and exercise at the same time. But yes, I am toned and have the beginnings of a 6 pack.
I did do 30 day shred and did it 5dpw. I found it not as effective as other workouts purely because you do the same one every day - I like the programs where you mix and match a few different workouts as they maintained my interest more

I've only ever did home dvds. I'm pretty fit . I recommend Jillian Michaels too.

ACPC · 16/05/2019 14:37

I use JM Burn Fat, Boost Metabolism and No More Trouble Zones

losenotloose · 16/05/2019 14:39

I have the shred DVD and don't do it every day as I'd get too bored but I do classes at the gym.

I've never heard any controversy! I think you're meant to do it 5 days a week.

She gets on my tits but the Davina ones work quickly as does Callanetics but you do have to work hard!

losenotloose · 16/05/2019 14:41

I could be more careful of what I eat but I'm 10 stone and 5ft7 so not overweight. I'm not expecting the body of a supermodel but would just like to be less flabby!

Absolutely. I've been doing hiit workouts (bodyfit by Amy on youtube) 5 days a week for 18 months and am very fit and toned. I use dumbells/kettlebells and resistance bands. Do about 30 mins a day. The secret is to really concentrate on what you are doing and ensure you're engaging all the correct muscles. It would take me longer to get to a gym and back than my whole workout takes.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 16/05/2019 14:45

The 30 day shred is good but as others have said, it can be quite repetitive.

UCOinanOCG · 16/05/2019 16:54

I want to get fitter and more toned so I am marking this thread as a good source of ideas for doing at home. Thanks!

GloGirl · 16/05/2019 16:58

Also placemarking! I've recently joined a gym which I love but it's not as local as I'd like.

SimonJT · 16/05/2019 16:59

I do insanity four times a week and weigts (at home) five times a week. You definitely don’t need to go to a gym to improve your fitness/tone.

losenotloose · 16/05/2019 17:00

What kind of weights Simon? Do you follow a programme?

JeremyIronsBenFolds · 16/05/2019 17:05

I second BodyFit by Amy on youtube. She's got a ton of workouts, all different varieties and lengths - I do her kettlebell and TRX workouts, they're great. Weights are what have made the most difference to my shape, I use free weight and kettlebells, around 20 mins a session, and after a year I've never looked better.

SimonJT · 16/05/2019 17:06

I have dumbells, kettles and a bar with weights, I tend to work a different muscle group each day, tonight it will be upper back so bent over rows with weights, renegade row with weights, kettle swings and dead lifts.

GlamGiraffe · 16/05/2019 17:07

If you do it right, yes.
For bum shaping look up some "clam sequences" online. There are different variations.do them very slowly and with a lot of hip stability. If they don't hurt you're doing it wrong. They will make a difference.
The trick is the right exercise for what you want to achieve and your body type.

Allhailthesun · 16/05/2019 17:13

I got visibly toned. People always comment on my arms. They were definitely bingo wings before shred. I do Level 3 most days.

However the abs only show if I cut out sugar and carbs. But you do get them. And good thighs.
The only thing 30 day shred doesn’t do for me is my bottom. But that’s just a bit of a rubbish shape I think.

Colinthedog · 16/05/2019 17:14

I love Body Project and lost over 2 stone of baby weight following their workouts, then used them to maintain. There’s a small cost but it’s really cheap, and they have loads of different workouts so tons of variety. Most of them are under 30 mins as well so you are in and out and then you are done. Much more motivating to me than a gym membership, and I can actually fit the workouts in around work and DS. Can’t rate them highly enough. Loads of options and adaptations for different fitness levels too (with some really challenging ones if that’s your thing). And some good programmes to follow if you want to be told which workout to do. Not doing much at the moment as nearly 8 months pregnant but will definitely be using the workouts to shift the weight this time too...

losenotloose · 16/05/2019 18:46

Looking up clam sequences now clam!

Yes I look toned if I do five shred sessions in a week, too. Noticed my back the most!

bugeyedbarber · 16/05/2019 20:04

I got ripped on JM's Shred. It's fantastic. I hate gyms. The fact you have to go there, change, shower, faff. Just no.

Mat on the floor, throw on a sports bra and trainers.

I have a mini six pack from training with her. Happy days.

Starlight2004 · 16/05/2019 20:10

I think with weights it is. Get a bar, a kettlebell, some dumbbells and don't be afraid to go heavy and then look at home programs which use these. Emily Skye fit is a great one.

LoubyLou1234 · 16/05/2019 20:21

I do home work outs. Les Mills app and you tube. I'm reasonably fit. I have a spin bike too. I've found that the strength ones are the ones that have made more impact to my body to be fair and I use resistance bands/mini bands for this.
I do long shifts so I don't work out as regularly as I'd like but in as fit as I was when I went to the gym.

Selfcarequeereyestyle · 17/05/2019 13:46

I’m at home in my gym kit about to try one of the workouts recommended and then couldn’t find the thread so here I am marking my place!
