I’ve never had it before but today my nose has been running and my eyes are sore and red. Can you get it as a one off??

Yup, I get it some years and not others, and only in some places, I assume it’s the pollen of a certain plant/plants that I’m allergic to so only happens when that particular plant is very pollen-y iyswim

squee123 · 12/05/2019 11:04

yes. Happened to me. Never had it then one day it suddenly started. Doctor said it might be that a neighbour had planted something I'm allergic to. Continued for a few months. Coincidentally I moved a few months later and it never happened again. Weird

Happened to me! Never had it, and then last year had it really badly where I couldn't go outside without taking a few anti histamines. It's a right pain!

i didnt get it until i was 23 and staying in a wooded environment

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 12/05/2019 11:19

That’s so weird, had no idea that could happen.
I feel real sympathy for those that get it every year. It’s so annoying!

It happened to me.
I thought I had a cold for weeks and weeks.
People would spot my red runny nose and thunderous sneezes and say "Hayfever?"

I'd say no, luckily it was just a cold.

BrokenWing · 12/05/2019 11:22

I am in my 50s and only started getting hayfever last year. I take a tablet every morning and it keeps most symptoms at bay.

MrsSpenserGregson · 12/05/2019 11:24

Ive got it this year, for the first time in my life, and I'm well into my 40s.

(I've actually started another thread about it!)

I thought it was a cold at first, but it went on for far too long. It's really annoying now, as the daily antihistamines aren't strong enough to blot it out totally, but Piriton puts me to sleep and keeps me there for a couple of days.

MindyStClaire · 12/05/2019 11:27

I suddenly got it in my early 20s. I like to blame DH for it, he'd had it forever and I never did til I met him...

BrokenWing · 12/05/2019 11:30

MrsSpenser of I get nasal congestion I also use Beconase nasal spray along with the centirizine and it works well.

OldAndWornOut · 12/05/2019 11:33

I think hayfever meds contain either one or other main ingredients. (Don't know what they're called)

For people who aren't getting relief, it may be worth trying a couple of different types.

MidsomerBurgers · 12/05/2019 11:36

Yes, I never had it until I was pregnant.

Jsmith99 · 12/05/2019 11:41

Yes, absolutely.

My allergy to oil seed rape pollen flared up suddenly in my late 30s. I now hate May. If you are atopic (ie prone to allergic reactions) your body will often find new things to react to, because that is just what it does.

aprilshowers12 · 12/05/2019 11:41

I'm in my 50's and developed it fir the first time only a few years ago when I moved to a rural area.

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 12/05/2019 11:56

Nothing has changed in my life so it’s weird it’s suddenly happened. Took an antihistamine this morning but it’s made zero difference.

BrokenWing · 12/05/2019 12:05

It takes a while for the Antihistamine to build up in your system. Might take a few days to notice any difference.

BrokenWing · 12/05/2019 12:06

Friends tell me they take them really early before hayfever season so it is built up in their system before it starts, I'm sure I also read that in the leaflets somewhere.

Punxsutawney · 12/05/2019 12:28

My Ds is 14 and has had awful hayfever over the years. He has prescription anti histamine. Unusually this year he has barely suffered at all yet. It has normally kicked in by now. Not sure if he is growing out of it or if it's just late to start for him this year.

Soubriquet · 12/05/2019 12:29

I’ve had it this year

Never had it before but now when I walk the dogs I have to take an antihistamine as I end up with itchy nose

MiniMum97 · 12/05/2019 14:13

Yep I suddenly developed hay fever in my twenties. Oddly it was initially in one eye only (properly streaming!) and in odd days. No pattern to it at all. It stayed like this for ages and then a few years ago had proper hay fever all season for two years. Then nothing. Completely stopped.

All very odd. I have autoimmune diseases and wonder if it's something to do with my immune system not functioning properly.
