Help - Could my baby have diabetes?

Baby is five months, been up every 2 hours in the night to feed n weeding through nappies and sheets in middle of night. Before she was sleeping 4-6 hours at night, only changed nappy when up for the morning. Been a bit grizzly and tired lately. Quite worried now after reading signs of diabetes online. X

Have a read up about the 4 month sleep regression before you start panicking.

It sounds more likely shes having a growth spurt or sleep regression. If shes up feeding 2 hourly at that age then that will be why she's so wet. Absolutely raise your concerns with your health visitor but I would also support your baby to learn self settling techniques (I used the little ones sleep programme as I disagree with CIO). That way she can settle herself back to sleep at night. My baby still needed a 10/11pm feed before she had solid food but could then go until morning

Thank you, been reading about sleep regression, thought we went through it a month ago and now we’re on a better schuedle, until last few nights. Her nappies are massive with wee, I change just before bed (7-8 pm) and by 3 am it’s completely soaked through and her sheets as well Sad very unusual, we used to change only before bed and waking at 6-7 am. She also has very itchy skin? Nappies during day are mostly the same.

Have you tried a different size and style of nappy? Just to rule that out.

Emilyrose0 · 12/05/2019 05:21

Thank you, not yet. Seemed different than when she’s grown out of a size as it’s just a massive quantity of wee-really the entire nappy is saturated in just a few hours. Will pop to the shops today to try a different nappy but really quite concerned about how much is coming out of her Sad

It’s so normal. As she grows she will wee more!
Also you may feel you’re in a good parternt but babies have other ideas! I say this as mum to an almost 2 year old who slept 7-7 from 6 weeks old, until 18 months when she decided waking up every 2/3 hours was fun and still gets up at 5am!

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 12/05/2019 08:18

Sounds perfectly normal to me.

But if you're worried, see your GP.

Mrscog · 12/05/2019 08:21

I think there are 4 ‘t’s - Thirsty, Tired, thinner, toilet. How has her weight gain been recently? And what has she been like during awake periods? I’d pop to the GP if you’re worried.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 12/05/2019 08:22

Two of my friends have got kids with diabetes, one was 8 months when she was diagnosed.

Both children had virus after virus after virus. As well as the 4 T's.

OP my baby feeds every 2 hours and soaks our bed with wee. All my kids have done it.
I'm going up a size in nappies to see if that helps.

t1mum3 · 12/05/2019 19:55

It wouldn't hurt to pop to the GP and ask for a finger prick blood test. I know of babies that have been diagnosed to the volume of wet nappies, but on the other hand I know lots of babies who have a lot of wet nappies who don't have type one diabetes.

If you smell pear drops on your child or if they have problems breathing, are vomiting or extremely listless then you should treat it as an emergency.
