Treatment for varicose veins?

Anyone had treatment for varicose veins?

By the nhs? Privately? If so how much did it cost? Did you get more varicose veins after treatment?

I hate mine!

No advice but I’m interested too, I have one on my leg from pregnancy and I hate itSad

The NHS no longer do the operation for varicose veins, well not in our trust anyway.

Yes and both legs were quite frankly disfigured, particularly my right thigh to ankle which bulged.
No - NHS won't do it anymore, I had it done at Veincentre in Manchester. It cost £2k in total for both legs, 3 years ago.
I had EVLA, where they basically cauterise the vein, then fill it so it doesn't re-fill or droop. It took about a year for the discoloured veins to dissipate but my legs look amazing- no sign I'd ever had a problem and nothing ever appeared - I'm 49,

I've got one bad vein on each leg caused by pregnancy. NHS only do it in certain areas of the country and only in extreme cases where other health issues could be caused due to severity of veins.

Private it's about 1.5-2k per leg/vein. Recovery time can be long.

@mrswarthog

Is it a walk in walk out procedure?

Are their risks in having it done?

So it was a year before you could show your legs off?

DH has had chronic varicose veins since his early 20s due to a standing job. He's had his stripped twice on the NHS, but the last treatment he had was sclerotherapy, where they inject a foam into the veins instead. This makes the vein disappear over time, and he had two bulging knots behind his knees that completely disappeared within 12 months. He had that done around 8 years ago, and I think he's looking at getting it done again. He had no pain or discomfort afterwards. The only negative is that he's had really severe restless leg syndrome since getting this done but we don't know if he'd have had that anyway.

I'm interested in this too. Worries me that there are risks.

mrswarthog · 11/05/2019 22:15

Yes walk in/out.
TBH, I could see the darker veins but nobody else noticed - even my waxer said it was near invisible.

I couldn't find any risks, even my GP thought it was gold standard. No anaesthetic, no stitches, no 6 weeks off work.
I had mine done on Thursday 5th May 2016 & was back in work the following Tuesday after the bank holiday.
