Help!!! Car we bought today is damaged! Will the dealership cover the cost??

Today, DH picked up our new car. It's 2nd hand and we had been to view it and test driven it. There were a few small scratches which were all repaired for us collecting today.

When we viewed the cars, there were stickers on the headlights (which DH told me were for driving the car abroad). They hadn't been removed yet as the car was yet to be serviced/cleaned.

Anyway, DH has collected the car today and we have just noticed the headlights are cracked beneath where the stickers were. It looks so obvious in the pictures but we didn't notice to begin with as it's harder to see with the sun light shining on them.

Will the dealership sort this for us do you think or will it be our responsibility now that we have paid for it?

I'm gutted and just hoping we won't need to foot the repair bill.

It's a Peugeot garage, if that makes any odds.

Okay, I'll call them instead of emailing. The thought of phoning makes me nervous because it doesn't give me time to think through what they're saying and I don't want to get bulldozed into a resolution that I'm not happy with. That is why I had prepared the email. But if you think phoning will be best then that's what I'll do.

That's very poor of them.

They need replacing, tell them that polishing them will make them worse. The idiot.,

Your email is far too passive. Don't ask them if you can return the car, tell them you will be if this isn't sorted out very quickly.

Emails are too easy to ignore. You need to speak over the phone

HappyToSeeYou1 · 18/05/2019 10:38

I've called them. The sales manager is off today but back in on Monday. The guy I've been speaking to appears to be very helpful. He has assured me he will sort this on Monday when the sales manager is back in. I have told him if they can't resolve this then we will be returning the car as a matter of principle because it is not what we paid for.

I'll update you all on Monday once I hear from them. Here's hoping they'll offer to replace the headlights 🙏🏼

No worries happytoseeyou. I only joined this forum to help you out as it was on my google news feed.

A peugeot approved car is typically low mileage and stickered up as so and you're usually told as part of the sales pitch. It comes with an extended warranty.

They should replace both full headlight units as the lens is bonded on so not able to be replaced. Please look in your owners manual page 233 and it has about the protective coating on the light lens. G3, polish etc are abrasive to a degree so shouldn't be used.

Whiteroseredrose yes I'm sure about the lights. I work for a large company in the engineering department and we typically take employees in other departments cars and present them for MOT, so we've seen failures for degraded light beam patterns, no beam patterns, LHD beam patterns from stickers and incorrect headlights fitted.

It all depends on your MOT tester aswell, some will overlook stuff like that. My old MOT garage use to pass one of my old cars with an aftermarket HID kit (not a boy racer, just used to work night shift and had a 30 mile drive home on a unlit motorway and backroads, so visibility was essential, few days after removal I hit a fox at 70mph, didn't see it cause of how poor halogen bulbs are, was pretty nasty) fitted and they where illegal for a few years. Even got pulled twice by the police about them.

Apathy · 21/05/2019 16:47

Did they change them?

HappyToSeeYou1 · 21/05/2019 16:50

Hi Apathy. They are on the case but they told me that they've been shocked by the price of replacement headlights for our model (£400 per light). They are currently trying to source second hand lights, but in perfect condition. They said the lights will be no older than our car. I'm okay with that.

I did also find out it is a Peugeot approved used car.

I'm just hoping they'll be replaced soon and we can just move on from this 👍🏻

First time I've seen your thread and was getting worried as I read it that they'd keep stonewalling and you'd give up, very pleased to see you've made some progress.

Car dealers do their stereotypical reputation no good by always living up to it.

Apathy · 21/05/2019 18:32

The high cost is cause of the LED daytime running lights.

I'm surprised they're not just changing them for new headlights regardless of the cost and sending them off to peugeot as warranty since its a peugeot approved car.

At least you're getting it sorted finally.

I had to deal with peugeot (cumbria) last week for a aircon problem with a used car I bought off them, sadly you haven't had the same experience I had. Diagnosed as a split radiator, had one in stock, offered me a hire car to drive into town or the lake district, fitted new raidiator and regassed the full system in just over 2 hours. Couldn't fault them.

Apathy · 21/05/2019 18:35

Hopefully I'll never have to replace these peugeot lights. Think I'd have a heart attack replacing 2 full led headlights 😂
