Confuzzlediddled · 11/05/2019 16:09

I'm scottish, been with my English DH for 10 years and he asked me what it means a couple of weeks ago!! Wonder what he thought I meant all these years Hmm

NaToth · 11/05/2019 16:09

It's a Scottish thing. I get it because XDP is Scottish.

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 11/05/2019 16:09

I haven't a clue! (English)

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 11/05/2019 16:10

I would guess and say after 8pm ?!

DesparateDino · 11/05/2019 16:11

I only know because I have a Scottish DH. Did confuse me for a while.

Givem · 11/05/2019 16:11

After 8pm?

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2019 16:13

Scottish thing. I regularly confuse English colleagues when I say I'll phone them at say the back of 1

Same with out with. I recorded our team voicemail and said something like outwith office hours and other colleagues didn't have a clue!

SpoonBlender · 11/05/2019 16:13

Never heard that phrase, but I'd say "after eight? Sure" to check.

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/05/2019 16:14

Just after 8 of course Grin

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2019 16:14

I class as the " back of " as the first 15 minutes of the hour

Poundlandkate · 11/05/2019 16:14

No idea I would guess after 8pm.

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2019 16:15

*outwith. Even autocorrect doesn't like it

FizzBuzzBangWoof · 11/05/2019 16:19

Storie - what does outwith mean?

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/05/2019 16:19

I'm English, though I've been here 18 years, and Dd is born and brought up here.
She doesn't use too many Scottish terms at home, but she lived away for a while a couple of years back.
She came home saying things like "piece", "the now", "up the stair".
Saying that, I'm recently realised I ask where people stay, as opposed to where they liveGrin

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2019 16:22

Scottish people don't like to be pinned down hence back o 8 Grin

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2019 16:24

Yes it is before 20 past.

RaffertyFair · 11/05/2019 16:24

Yep it's a Scottish thing . Always reminds me of my Granny.

Lucked · 11/05/2019 16:25

Outwith means outside of - so outwith office hours or outwith a contract

StoorieHoose · 11/05/2019 16:27

Outwith means outside the set parameters. So "outwith office hours" would mean the time not during 9-5. I'm amazed its not more well know. It's a fab descriptive word

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/05/2019 16:29

outwith is outside the norm, not usual, not done

So outwith office hours is outside office hours.

Outwith a contract etc

Common sense outwith = my best mates description of the odd things her 9 year old does.

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2019 16:38

Is outwith not used outwith Scotland?

Queenofthebrae · 11/05/2019 16:41

I had no idea that arranging to meet at the back of the hour was unusual. I think I use that phrase on an almost daily basis. (Born and bred Scot)

Shelbybear · 11/05/2019 16:41

use the phrase frequently! Sometime after 8, usually I'd say it means between 8-8.30. I'm always late so I'll say back of coz that covers me for a while lol

KneelJustKneel · 11/05/2019 16:43

See in my (very southern English) mind Id have thought back of being say just before/behind! So say 7.50!

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2019 16:57

Back means behind though so 7.50 makes no sense
