Referral from school to hospital (TB)

Hi
My youngest is in Reception class at school. Both him and his brother when they were born had a TB jab, as recommended due to where I was originally from. I've received a letter today with a hospital appointment which is very vague, stating that a school nurse referred him about his TB status. I'm angry as don't understand why, cant call school or hospital with it being weekend. So confused as to what this is for! Does anyone know? And surely school should have notified us that's what they will be doing? And why?

Do the school have a copy if his vaccination record, do they know he had the jab.

It’s not the school that have referred him, it’s the school nursing service, and they will have done so based on something in his records. I’m guessing that something hasn’t been recorded properly somewhere along the line and they think he needs the TB jab. I’m sure it’ll be easy to clear up when you speak to someone.

I have no idea to be honest, they have never asked me for any and I don't remember filling in any forms to advise them of anything to do with their jabs. My eldest is 7 and he has never been referred. I'm very overprotective so something like this is going to stay on my mind all weekend. It can be a routine thing but why shouldn't school make us aware then?

Oh I see! I'm sure he had it done as soon as he was born. As it's done at hospital I would have thought they have it recorded on the system. Thank you

If either of them have had the vaccinations this will be in your records, I would ask for a copy for both of them to keep, you have to provide evidence of TB vaccinations in lots of situations and they will need up to date information.

There is an NHS website about BCG vaccinations which might be of help

I've looked on NHS site it didn't really help but thank you

Maybe someone in their school has TB and they want to vaccinate close friends/classmates just in case.

Russell19 · 11/05/2019 15:47

School nurse is still NHS..... so school haven't referred it, the NHS school nurse service has. Contact on Monday morning, nothing else you can do, I don't think it'll be anything to worry about.

Do you have his red book? There should be a record of his TB vaccination there which may have the information they need when you speak to them next.

Dcs born in inner city London are given the TB vaccination they had to to wait until they are about 4 months old before they had it and it’s usually done at a designated centre as it’s a more complicated procedure using a thicker needle which is burrowed into the skin on the upper arm It also results in a larger scar which is quite distinctive
