Jeremy Corbyn and the minimum wage

First I should say I'm a life-long Labour supporter. I've never voted for anyone else.

Apparently JC is saying he wants to raise the NMW to £10 per hour and he wants to stop the differentiation that exists now due to age.

I think this shows a real lack of understanding of how things work. If a 25 year old is to be paid the same as a 16 year old, who will employ the 16 year old?

Secondly, if the NMW increases suddenly then that's going to have a big impact on prices.

He doesn't seem to understand this. I do think the NMW is too low, btw, but I really disagree with his solution.

I do disagree with under 25s having a lower min wage. Why should someone who's 18 who is non contact with their family and has children be paid less than a 25 year old living at home with no dependants?

RubberTreePlant · 11/05/2019 14:13

What @Kpo58 said.

He knows he won’t get elected so he can say what he likes.

I completely disagree with different minimum wages, it’s age discrimination and there’s no justification for it at all. The pay is for the role, not the person.

I dislike him intensely I entirely admit and fully think that he attempts to run his party through a cult of personality rather than any real ability to lead.

The key here is that he likes the soundbite element of this but clearly misunderstands the economics.

I work in health and social care where margins are insanely tight. If you put the NMW up that much in one fell shot the following would happen

Smaller providers would go bankrupt or sell because local authority payment wpuld not increase for the bed use in line with the NMW increase.

Margins are so tight that jump would instantly put people out of business.

The majority of people in our industry are on NMW so this would be across the board.

So great Jeremy....not only would he put a swathe of great hardworking carers out of work but the people they care for would be left without support as only a few of the big providers would survive and they wouldn't be able to cope with getting the carers and people under them.

Frankly they would then be able to make their price as local authorities have to support care but local authorities can't afford to pay more.

So for his two seconds in the sun and because he hasn't got the brains to understand finance he would screw everyone.

I agree NMW should be raised but anyone with half a brain can see why the economy can't take such a fast one from 8.21

Pipandmum · 11/05/2019 14:17

I think you are right that if everyone has same minimum wage that youngsters won’t be employed. But I do think 18 plus should have same minimum wage. Then it increases with experience. But £10 for all is big hike and a lot of places won’t be able to pay that. Doesn’t really sound thought through.

ItalianEarthernware · 11/05/2019 14:19

I agree with Kpo

Reddedder · 11/05/2019 14:22

Youth unemployment would go up. He really hasn’t a clue. Idiot.

SimonJT · 11/05/2019 14:22

I lived on my own from the age of 17, as I was subjected to age discrimination paying my rent and affording food was incredibly difficult.

I do think NMW needs to increase, but it’s more sensible to do it gradually.

Torsz · 11/05/2019 14:26

No surprise there - he's clueless, it wouldn't work in practice and it's just another attempt to bribe/fool young people into supporting him!

HollowTalk · 11/05/2019 14:27

I agree it's to get young people to vote for him.

I think the difference is supposed to be so that people have a salary scale based on age and experience.

I don't see why people would be arsed to train for years and have a crap work life balance in jobs like Teaching, nursing, social work if nmw goes up any more.

GassyAss · 11/05/2019 14:40

I employ 16 and 17 year olds. I could not justify paying them the same as my older more experienced and responsible staff. They can only work weekends and school holidays so I’m unable to give them more responsibility that would warrant a higher rate of pay. If NMW for them increased to £10ph, I’d just stop employing them I’m afraid as it’s just not worth it. I could get a full time member of staff at that rate and they’d be able to work every day.

IceRebel · 11/05/2019 14:40

I've got to agree with winewolfhowls. What's the point in training for such professions, if a minimum wage job actually ends up being less hours, more pay and a better work life balance.

Kpo58 · 11/05/2019 14:48

It doesn't really matter what you put the min wage to as everything else will inflate in cost so amount it's worth won't change.

Ginkypig · 11/05/2019 14:51

I left home and had no family support at 17 the cost for me to run my house was the same as someone who was 25+ so why should I be payed less?

If your doing a different job fine but if we both do the same job and the same hours why would one earn less!

It's no different if you replaced age with male and female is it?

MockerstheFeManist · 11/05/2019 14:52

Sounds a lot like the previous 'promise' to "abolish" student debt, which was, it turned out, nothing of the sort.

By all means raise the rates for young people. Maybe even pay the full rate to over-18s, but not 16 & 17 y/o's who should be in training, not full-time work.

Ginkypig · 11/05/2019 14:53

I don't know where the spelling mistake came from Blush

Rightoutofhere · 11/05/2019 14:56

I’m not sure how I feel about the age thing. I’m over 25 and get paid nearly £2 an hour more than another girl at my work who is 20. She has been there a year longer than me as well.

HollowTalk · 11/05/2019 14:58

But @ginkypig, in a lot of jobs there's a sliding scale based on how long you've been there. Two teachers might do the same job but one will be paid more because she's been teaching longer. That's completely normal in many, many jobs - and of course those two people might well have different financial situations at home. You can't pay salaries based on people's home lives.

FiremanKing · 11/05/2019 15:01

He wants the student phone vote because the young and impressionable are his only hope.

Many small businesses will go under if the minimum wage for younger people increases but he isn’t interested in helping them.

ineedaknittedhat · 11/05/2019 15:02

Aw, Magic Grandad has no concept of reality.

Kpo58 · 11/05/2019 15:04

If a business has to sack over 25s because they can't afford the current NMW, then they probably aren't a viable business anyway.

Increasing the NMW is a different issue.

Clearyweary · 11/05/2019 16:22

Blatant vote buying. He is a total liability.

SilverySurfer · 11/05/2019 16:27

Since he and his party are economically illiterate - it doesn't matter what he says since he knows he is unlikely to ever be in the position of having to deliver. However If he ever was, don't bet on it and god help the country.
