Just that really, had sciatica since pregnancy, first child now 7.

It ebbs and flows, but today it is really bothering me and the pain has spread to my lower back.

Does it ever go away completely?

Have you had physio?

Peridot1 · 11/05/2019 12:11

I go to a chiropractor. He sorted mine.

Look up stretches for piriformis syndrome and do them every day, worked wonders for me.

  • regular stretches ever morning. Google sciatica stretches. Do them religiously
  • also google sciatic nerve flossing and do those exercises every day
  • Pilates classes to strengthen the core
  • drink lots of water every day

I left my sciatica too long and ended up with a fully herniated disc. Don’t ignore it.

Physio, chirp and lots of nerve flossing stretches. Also strengthen your core! You can ease it but will always have to manage it I find.

Stretches.
Get up and move around for a few minutes after an hour or so of sitting.
Do not use office chairs with wheels - they are evil.

I’ve used a technique I found on YouTube to great effect when I’ve been desperate in the past.

You make a fist and run the finger joints slowly and with pressure down the outside of your lower leg 4 times from knee to ankle joint. Then repeat 3 times on the inside of the leg upwards from ankle to knee. It really hurts when you're doing it but afterwards the pain was so much better.

Worth a try perhaps!

Pigeon pose is excruciatingly wonderful for sciatica. Just treat it with respect, gently does it. Do it regularly, both sides, even when you don't have sciatica - for maintenance.

It really gets into the deep tissues and nerves in the hip area.

You can do it lying on your back or on a yoga mat if you want a deeper stretch.

I can't go a day without me Pigeon Smile

Tennis ball rolled in the bum area up against a wall is another good deep massage, but again, as per my advice above if your sciatica is acute you need to do it very cautiously so you are gently massaging rather than going in too deep.

As the sciatica calms down over several weeks, you can increase the intensity.

Thanks all, some really great tips here, will give them a try, you know how it goes, you do the work feel better, then stop and it comes back, you'd think I'd know by now!

Probably not recommended, but I fell off a horse, as I was falling I remember saying to myself 'relax, you need to bounce, cannot afford any broken bones'. Anyway I discovered later once the post pins and needles sort of numbness had gone and the bruising had gone down that to my delight that my sciatica had disappeared. I can only assume that the trapped nerve was untrapped!
I would suggest a chiropractor could help.
