Help me work out what our neighbour is up to!

We have just lost our house sale due to "concerns about the neighbours". This is, in part, because of the number of cars parked on and around the house (plus rubbish dumped in their garden).

We think the cars are to do with running some sort of business from the house, but we can't for the life of us work out what it is! Every week or two, a new or nearly new car appears. It stays parked outside our house for a few days/week then disappears. This morning we saw two men turn up (no sign of neighbours) with a clipboard and inspect the car. They then drove off in it. What the hell is going on?! We don't think that they're for sale, at least not to the public, because we can't find them on auto trader, parkers etc. Any ideas what they're up to?

Do you live near an airport?

Reallybadidea · 11/05/2019 12:07

About 30 minutes away.

Could it be something to do with lease cars being inspected at the end of the contract? Long shot I suppose but if they are all fairly new then maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 11/05/2019 12:16

Could they be hire cars? Men with clip boards are from hire/lease company collecting and checking no damage.

X post!

Passthecherrycoke · 11/05/2019 12:18

Just doing up cars and selling them on. They don’t need to be selling to the public or on auto trader

Gatoadigrado · 11/05/2019 12:18

Parked outside your house? On the street you mean? My first thought was renting out driveway space for airport parking but if it’s on street that’s strange

FiremanKing · 11/05/2019 12:22

My daughter has this. Next door but one. The family are Polish and the cats arrive. Nothing is done to them, they are not for sale. All parked horizontally very neatly on his drive and outside his house. They can be there a few days or weeks and then they disappear. They look slightly battered as if they need some TLC but no work is carried out whilst they are there.

FiremanKing · 11/05/2019 12:22

Cars not cats

Gatoadigrado · 11/05/2019 12:23

I think your neighbours are crims.
You don’t live next door to Phil Mitchell do you?

Ariela · 11/05/2019 12:25

Rented out part of his drive to a car rental company?

Reallybadidea · 11/05/2019 12:26

I don't think that they're being done up because we never see them being worked on, just cleaned.

Yes, parked outside our house. Parking outside our house has been a bone of contention for years - they do it in preference to parking outside theirs and complain if we or our guests park in front of our house. I know, right Hmm

Rented out part of his drive to a car rental company

But he rarely parks them on his drive, just outside our house!

Check with the council if he is running a business from home and paying business rates?

Passthecherrycoke · 11/05/2019 12:31

They could be buying up old cars people don’t want and selling them for scrap at a higher rate. There is a lot of industry around old bangers, people just want rid of them

Gatoadigrado · 11/05/2019 12:33

New or nearly new cars though OP said. And on street so it can’t be renting out driveway space.
(I’m firmly of the belief it’s a Phil Mitchell style crook next door)

Janedoughnut · 11/05/2019 12:33

Could he be looking after them while the owners go on holiday. I'd see if you find any advertisements offering this service.

Passthecherrycoke · 11/05/2019 12:34

Oh sorry, I misread that as a new car appearing as in it’s not been there before so is new to he neighbour

Sobeyondthehills · 11/05/2019 12:38

Is it possible that he runs some type of airport parking company and that is where the cars are ending up? Rather than the secure area that is promised

Reallybadidea · 11/05/2019 12:41

Check with the council if he is running a business from home and paying business rates?

This is kinda the point, it's a council house and I doubt very much that they have permission to run a business from it.

They could be buying up old cars people don’t want and selling them for scrap at a higher rate.

But these are new or nearly new cars

Good idea

LellyMcKelly · 11/05/2019 12:42

If it’s close to an airport or port it could be that they are looking after cars for the holiday makers. We live near a cruise ship port on a quiet street and often see off cars parked outside a neighbour’s house for a week or two before vanishing.

Reallybadidea · 11/05/2019 12:44

@Gatoadigrado

He's an unpleasant twat but I don't really think he's a criminal. Much as I'd love to see him banged up.

A couple of streets away from me a man has a huge, unkept garden. He rents it out to the local used car place, and they park cars there that have just been traded in, and overflow from the forecourt. Sounds similar?

pink412 · 11/05/2019 12:58

As other have said check for business rates if not you can report them anonymous. I’ve done it loads and a few have ended up with very large bills. Not sorry at all
