I had a massive cold sore come up on Thursday, that’s when the tingles started. Didn’t get anything on it on it in time, it’s now huge. I have to be somewhere on Thursday, is there any hope it will be gone? Please share any tips for getting rid of it! Sob

Boots sold then for £30 or thereabouts.

I get acyclovir 400mg prescription from the doctors take one every morning and one every night never had a cold sore in 2 years!! Used to get one a month at least.

Weaverspin · 12/05/2019 17:13

I think Boots had to stop selling their zapper as they had infringed the patent of the Virulite, or something. And it's not placebo - there is actual medical evidence for this one, and in the US they prescribe it, as the most effective treatment for coldsores. (I'm not on commission, btw) :)

Lysine!! Definitely.

Also ice it when it’s still massive.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/05/2019 17:19

Oh ok, but Virulite's gone too?

Or at last the price went sky high?

I bought two, just in case one breaks

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/05/2019 17:19

And it works brilliantly.

flamingnoravera · 12/05/2019 17:22

I also take anti vitals daily, in my case I take valocyclovir (valtrex) on prescription, if I get one attempt at an outbreak a year I'm unlucky (was monthly) and if you get to know your prodrome symptoms (headache, tingly nerves, restlessness) you can zap it with a double or triple dose. If you get an outbreak, you double or triple up in the dose and two days sorts it (for me). You might have to plead with the dr to get it but if you have frequent outbreaks you should get it.

You have my sympathy.

Nonotmenori · 12/05/2019 17:27

Lysine is the only thing that works. Take one a day and you'll never get another coldsore again.

Weaverspin · 12/05/2019 19:20

ChardonnaysPrettySister - you can still buy it on Amazon - for the best part of £100 Shock. And the Lipzor does the same thing, so it would seem - for the same price.

It's a crazy amount of money, but I figure that - given how much I've spent on creams and prescriptions over the decades - it's a worthwhile investment.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 12/05/2019 19:59

It used to be £ 30 or so in Boots and Lloyds.

Madness.

Looiloo79 · 12/05/2019 20:03

Lysine is my miracle ! Suffered all my life with them but no more since taking the supplements and using the Lysine ointment on my lips. Zovirax stopped working for me years ago.

Weaverspin · 14/05/2019 08:33

I stopped using Zovirax because even if it seemed to stop one coldsore, another would then pop up close by - even bigger and uglier. It was like playing whack-a-mole. I gave up. The Virulite is my saviour (though I have now started taking Lysine, having read all the recommendations on this thread!).

ssd · 14/05/2019 08:34

Get acyclovir from your GP. Tablets that work. Trust me.

NoneButOurselves · 14/05/2019 08:40

I had a recent cold sore and alternated the Bonjela and the Zovirax roughly every two hours. Took about a week to go, which is quicker than usual for me.

Those who use the Compeed patch: HOW??? I felt like I was perpetually ripping off the scab that was forming, plus the patch wasn't quite big enough to cover the entire sore(s)

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/05/2019 08:56

Acyclovir does work.

GP used to be very reluctant to prescribe it, because it used to cost a lot, but it seems the price has come down now.

LittleRedMushroom · 14/05/2019 10:58

I go online and buy aciclovir tablets from an online pharmacy - they stop cold sores dead.
My bottom lip used to swell up with cold sores all over it - hideous and excruciating. This is the only thing that works for me.

vinegarqueen · 14/05/2019 11:26

Bonjela - the same stuff you use for mouth ulcers that puts a skin over it. I've also managed to blitz one using neat TCP, but it may have been a fluke.

Renamedyetagain · 12/03/2025 15:31

I burn it with a teaspoon that's been in boiling water when the itch starts, then the sore doesn't even form.

ssd · 12/03/2025 17:10

My gp prescribes me acyclovir tablets
