Are graduated bobs still in fashion?

I’m at the hairdressers in half an hour, so posting here for traffic rather than style and beauty.

I’ve not had my hair cut in over a year, my hair is a mess and half of it falling out as I had a baby 6 months ago. It’s shoulder length and baby grabs it all the time but I hate having it up as it makes my face look fat(ter).
I need it all cut off and used to have graduated bobs which I think suit me but I don’t want to look dated.
Or Is here something else I should be asking for? Want chin length ideally.
Help I have no clue!

I've never liked them and do think they look dated. An all one length chin bob may be better.

Cloudsandcandles · 11/05/2019 08:30

I’m 28 and I have a slight graduated bob. It’s quite subtle but they’re definitely still a thing! Go for it 🙂

Eminybob · 11/05/2019 08:38

Ha, mixed reviews then.

I think I had an all one length bob once and hated it, but then he didn’t put any layers in so that could be why.

I usually have a one length bob (at my jaw) but my hair is so thin (still hasn’t recovered 2 years pp) I finally let the hairdresser make
It look fuller with a graduated bob and although I was heartbroken (Mumsy!) I’ve had loads of compliments and am
Working out how to style it so it looks more contemporary.

I’m 31 btw, and errr towards minimalist dressing and avoid “fashun” - avoiding Breton stripes and fat face floral dresses may help keep it fresh.

TheSheepofWallSt · 11/05/2019 08:42

*also help keep it fresh - not for a second suggesting Boden and fat face “fashionable”

Avoid ‘May I speak to the manager?’ hair and Lego hair.

Eminybob · 11/05/2019 08:46

I was thinking about a fringe but then thought bob+fringe=Lego hair so maybe not

What’s may I speak with the manager hair?

I've had graduated jobs and find them much more work in terms of blow trying /styling. I have a 3 year old and just being able to put my hair up quickly is very useful

Mrssnowflake · 11/05/2019 08:54

It depends if you the style suits you or if you're doing it to be 'on trend'. I think blunt one length bobs are now the thing but if the graduated look suits you more just go for it

Eminybob · 11/05/2019 08:54

I have fine very straight hair so find them relatively quick and easy to style. I’ve had them since I’ve had my 4 year old so not worried about that.

The good thing about a graduated bob is if you decide it's not for you, just get the front trimmed and turn it into a normal bob.

I also thought of 'can I speak to the manager hair'

Eminybob · 11/05/2019 08:57

I think the “on trend” ship has sailed, but I am worried about the mumsy thing. I’m 39 for reference.

Leaving in 5 mins and still not decided.

Oh I don’t think I’d want it as graduated as that picture!

Maybe I’ll ask for a slightly graduated bob.

newjobnerves · 11/05/2019 09:00

I've avoided it as all my friends seem to do it as soon as they have a baby! I used to have one in my early 20s, I personally think they're dated now, not the length but the gradient.

gamerwidow · 11/05/2019 09:00

I wouldn’t worry about what in fashion and go for something that you know suits your face shape and you can style instead.

Heymummee · 11/05/2019 09:00

Ask the hair dresser. I was in the same predicament and I also have a grabby baby, fine and thin hair and hate wearing it up. They gave me a really blunt, all the same length long cut which just touched my shoulders. No layers as that makes it look even more fine. It’s easy to style, they curled it into really loose waves for me and I loved it.
I was just honest with them and said I have no idea what to do but need something easy, that doesn’t make my hair look even more fine and something relatively on trend.

Freaking0ut · 11/05/2019 09:05

I think a graduated bob like this is lovely. Have whatever you want OP, dont worry about what other people think.

Go slightly graduated. Mine sits slightly above the back of my neck neck so it doesn't flick out but if it was that length all the way to the front it'd be just below my ears - awful. So it's slightly graduated so the front is chin length.

Soft waves looks fab too

Eminybob · 11/05/2019 10:15

Went for it. It is slightly longer at the front but not too much.
Can’t believe how much thicker and healthier it feels.
