Everyone is duping their unwanted good by our house

So we live in an end of terrace house and almost every day someone is dumping their unwanted goods (washing machines, furniture etc) by the side of our house. We have an entrance to the garden on that side and we use it very frequently so we have to pass by this rubbish every single day.

Today I popped out with my toddler and the area was clear, an hour later there I returned and there was some kind of machine (dishwasher of some kind) dumped right there. Across the road there was a neighbour loading rubbish and pieces of wood into his car so I have a feeling it was him.

So irritating. What to do?!

can you call the council.

octonoughtcake3 · 10/05/2019 14:53

I imagine a scrap metal dealer will remove it within 48 hours.

Unfortunately greedy councils usually charge to take large goods away and people on low incomes who can’t drive to the tip will not pay the money and fly tip instead.

My idea which has been rejected by local council for them to hold special days where large goods can be left out and collected free of charge, thus preventing fly tipping which has become a huge problem in many areas, has been repeatedly rejected.

Sounds very annoying and unsafe for your family. Do the council come and clear what's been dumped? Could you put up a fake CCTV camera or ask the council to put up some signage?

fourquenelles · 10/05/2019 14:58

Our local council has a "Love clean " website where you can report and upload a picture. The junk is usually gone within a couple of days. Worth seeing if your council has similar?

Hotandcold123 · 10/05/2019 15:03

@Fingermoose some stuff does get picked up quickly, and by that I mean 2-3 days, only to be replaced by something else, but some junk stays there for a lot longer. I haven’t spoken to the council, have only lived here for 2 years but it seems it gets worse, didn’t mind the odd junk before, but it’s now become the place to dump anything, even bags of rubbish.

@fourquenelles thank you, I’ll check that

firemanking that used to happen in our area.

The streets would be leafleted and bulky waste was put outside the night before the collection. People were then allowed (or even encouraged) to take / swap things and the real rubbish would be collected the next day.

Sadly it got stopped as it was considered too expensive. There used to be up to 3 free bulky waste collections from each property per year then they started charging for those... on top of that they are so inefficient that the one time I tried ot use them they told me it would be a month to six weeks before pick up. We were moving house and could hadly leave a sofa on the front for the buyer. Fortunately for us in a position to be able to pay someone else to do it the next morning.

There's always been some flytipping, but its far worse than its ever been.

One thing you can try is calling up local scrap metal people. They'll often pop round and take these things for free but usually not fridges and freezers becausw of the gases in them. Good chance they'd take a dishwasher though.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/05/2019 15:27

I used to have this problem. I always reported it to the council via an online portal and it was usually gone within a couple of days only for more to appear

Perhaps you could have a word with your local neighbourhood policing team and see if they would be able and willing to prosecute if you could provide good quality cctv evidence with faces and numberplates?

Or perhaps go down the fake cctv route first to see if that's enough of a deterrent

FiremanKing · 10/05/2019 16:05

Councils are run by greedy idiots. It costs them less to come out and pick up stuff that is occasionally reported than to hold an amnesty day and go round and do one big collection.

Meanwhile beauty spots are being ruined by fly tipping.

I have American relatives and they have been shocked when visiting the UK at how filthy many areas are and at the fly tipping.

FiremanKing · 10/05/2019 16:06

Another thing that some people fall prey to is hiring someone to take away their rubbish and even if that person has a waste licence there is no guarantee they won’t fly tip it either and if there is any evidence of who the original owner is the council will go after the original owner and fine them.
