Bloody BT scamming phone calls

Zofloramummy · 10/05/2019 11:06

I keep getting an automated telephone call telling me that my BT Internet is going to be cut off and please press 1 to stop it from happening. I usually just hang up.

Today I get a phone call from ‘open reach’ saying that my internet is underperforming and they are ringing up to fix it. They then start asking me how many things I normally have linked to my internet. Then they ask me to log onto my pc and go online.

Alarm bells are ringing so I tell them I can’t find my laptop charger and end the call. I went online and found out that it’s a well known scam to remotely get onto your laptop and then either threaten to corrupt your pc unless you pay or try to get your banking details.

They’ve just rung me back again and I told them to go away they are scammers and hung up. They’ve rung me 3 times immediately after! I’m not answering but it’s a real pain in the bum as I’m actually waiting for an important phone call Angry

Why aren’t BT stopping these calls? They are a pain in bum

I get them regularly - not sure what BT can do.

You can stop these by adding call protect to your phone from b.t. It's free, when you get a scam call you ring 1572 then.block that number.

I quite enjoy those calls. Unlike stringing them along and pretending I'm a bit old and slow at things on the computer.
From struggling to recognise the windows key, to taking ages to type, I can usually tie the scammer up for a good 10-20 minutes.
Eventually I let them know I'm not doing nothing they're telling me too and that I'm.taking the piss. Usually they swear at me and call me names so I laugh at them.
I figure, me taking their time for as long as I can, stops them calling someone else that may fall for it.

I get one of these types of calls at least once a day. Drives me mad. I doubt even bother answering the phone anymore.

Next time the number calls you reply with

Hello your call has been redirected to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau. This is Officer FAKE NAME. Please hold whilst we trace your location......

And they’ve rung again!!!

BT has a nuisance call blocker - I’d suggest getting that set up.

FriarTuck · 10/05/2019 13:43

I play with them. I'll admit it's a struggle not to laugh out loud but it's worth it as they sound more and more confused with what I'm coming out with until they realise they're the ones being scammed and then they swear at me Grin

MonkeyToesOfDoom
Same, it's very entertaining when you've got a free 10 minutes! They called my work the other day and I kept asking them who they'd spoken to at my head office etc. until they got quite angry.

They don’t just do it to BT customers, we’re with Virgin and get these calls regularly. I’m considering a whistle.

CurcubitaPepo · 10/05/2019 14:41

My dads been having these for a while. Recorded message claiming to be BT saying they’re going to cut him off.

Couple of weeks ago, he had four in a morning. He phoned me up saying “they’re going to cut me off, they’re going to cut me off” in a right old state. I told him I didn’t think he was with BT. I had to make a couple of calls, one to BT who established he was not their customer, and one to his actual provider in order to reassure him that nothing was going to happen.

He’s 86, frail and with poor hearing. He’s been having similar calls for years and dealing with them successfully, but on this particular day he was probably close to being sucked in. He changed his number the following day.

Cunts, utter cunts.

ratspeaker · 10/05/2019 16:26

Last one hung up after I said "this is Balamory Police Station, I'll go get PC Plum to talk to you"

ratspeaker · 10/05/2019 16:28

That also seems to work for accident claims calls especially if you ask the number of the police car involved

FreeTedHastings · 10/05/2019 16:31

It's not BT, nothing to do with them, or any of the other companies they pretend to call from.

Most of these calls originate from outside the country so UK rules are virtually powerless to deal with them.

Make a note of the number they come in on and block it. As others have said if you are on BT use their call blocker. bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9954/~/how-can-i-stop-nuisance-or-scam-calls%3F

If its about my internet then I inform them I actually do not have any internet connection. If its about my contract with BT I inform them I am not with BT. They swear and hang up.
