Travel insurance with cancer

Posting in chat for traffic, hoping someone knowledgeable wanders by!

Does anyone know if there are specialist insurers who would consider quoting for a very short notice European cruise for someone (not me!) who has advanced cancer, is up and about day to day, stable for many weeks on a new treatment which they are tolerating and may turn things around in the medium term? The insurers we've tried are all focussed on prognosis and survival at 6 months, which is so irrelevant for an easy trip next week!

Thanks in advance

you could try the allclear website. they specialise in finding insurers for medical conditions that might or wouldnt be covered by a standard insurer. I don't have cancer but i have to use them for my travel insurance as i have conditions that standard insurers just won't touch. good luck Thanks

We used a company called Insurancewith after DH had finished chemo, just found the policy and it was £88 for a one off trip to Bermuda.

Cancer Research and Macmillan have advice about this on their websites. Personally we didn't bother when we went away at Christmas, even within specialist insurers we were looking at over £1000 and the income said you've got more chance of breaking your arm than having a cancer related problem. DH was terminal though.

Oncologist not income. Bloody autocorrect.

Dh has a brain tumour and is currently abroad visiting his parents. He's insured with Insurewith for this trip, but he has also used Boots in the past. It's not cheap but in Europe you would get a cheaper quote I think as you wouldn't need to use private hospitals as the local hospitals would be fine.
There is a thread on this forum for people with cancer and they would almost certainly be able to help you.Sorry dont know how to link you to it hopefully someone will.

Another vote for InsureWith. Never had to make a claim but they’re prices have been reasonable for our family including one cancer diagnosis

I know they don't sound specialist but my Dad has only been able to get insurance (that isn't a price more expensive than the holiday!!) from Boots who are really good

Insurewith recently insured my 10 year old son for a trip to Florida. He isn't on treatment though but has an inoperable brain tumour and has had chemotherapy in recent years. We did battle to get anyone to insure him!

Is struggle to get cover despite having been out of treatment for 8 years. MIA are the only ones who will cover me (I had liver Mets which makes all the insurers a bit nasty even though im fine now).

They charge a flat fee - make sure whoever is accompanying is on same insurance. The most important thing really is repatriation atm as long as they use a state hospital.

Queenbetty · 10/05/2019 13:18

(They might not cover a cruise, and they offer no cancellation cover. But I cant get that anywhere anyway)

I eventually managed to get insurance with insurecancer.com. My mum only had six months or so life expectancy and no company would touch her as her oncologist wouldn’t confirm she had more than six months left, even though the holiday was the next week.

After a lot of work with insurecancer (who were fantastic)! and due to how many people were going on holiday etc, they agreed to insure at a cost of £1800 and a 2.5k excess! It was Florida we were going to and the money didn’t come into it for us.

Good luck.
