Only been in job 7 weeks and need to call in sick. Nervous!

I have been feeling off since Tuesday evening, last night I started vomiting a lot and today I’m very nauseous and have pain in my back and my pee is lovely shade of red/orange. I’m assuming a uti.

I don’t feel well enough to go to work but I’m wondering whether to force myself anyway because I feel bad ringing in after only 7 weeks. I feel very nervous( I have anxiety quite bad, starting the job was huge for me). I don’t start until 1.30 so I don’t need to phone yet but will soon, so I need to decide.

I’d see a GP and get properly signed off at least a week if possible. That should give the absence more weight.

Hollowvictory · 10/05/2019 09:01

Need to decide what? You can't go in with those symp. Call ASAP and also call the gp and get an appointment today so if you need antib you can get cracking on them and be back at work by Monday.
I had food poisoning 3 weeks into my new job I too felt nerv and guilty so I know what it's like, but we do t choose when to be ill. Hope you feel better soon 💐

Hollowvictory · 10/05/2019 09:03

Do t get signed off for a week unless you actually need a week off. That's bad advice. You want to focus on getting back ASAP. Plus the first few days are self certification.

I'd go to work with a UTI.

squee123 · 10/05/2019 09:05

call your GP for an emergency appointment, if it is after you are due to start at work call them and let them know you need an emergency appointment and you'll straight after to update them, but chances are you won't be in

thelastgoldeneagle · 10/05/2019 09:05

Why on earth would OP get signed off for a week, Teddybear?? You have no idea if she'll need a week off.

OP, make a GP appt today. You shouldn't go in if you've been vomiting anyway - how do you know the vomiting and pee are linked?

Teddybear45 · 10/05/2019 09:09

Most companies view absences under a week as the same as the odd day. In her circumstances and as uti’s often recur that could result in a displinary. If she has a proper signed off appt of a week every time (which is the time it takes for a uti to disappear anyway) it will help her.

YessicaHaircut · 10/05/2019 09:09

Don’t go in if you’re vomiting as it could be a bug and they will not want that potentially spreading around your workplace. Phone your GP and get some antibiotics today if you think you’ve got a uti and you should be ok for next week then. Phone your work as early as you can today to let them know. Hope you’re feeling better soon!

PinkDaffodil2 · 10/05/2019 09:10

Get a GP appointment ASAP, sounds like a UTI which may have developed into kidney infection so you need a proper assessment and antibiotics today. Please don’t ask for / expect a sick note (I know OP didn’t mention but PP did) as it’s entirely inappropriate as can self certify for up to a week and should be reviewed again by a doctor if not improving next week.

blackcatclocks · 10/05/2019 09:10

Ignore @Teddybear45 that's a stupid idea, especially as the first week is self certificated absence anyway 🤷‍♀️

I'd call your GP for an emergency appointment this morning and see if you can get in before work.

Rememberallball · 10/05/2019 09:11

I would call in sick and get an emergency appointment - you are assuming a UTI but don’t know yet. With the vomiting most places have a 24-48 hour after last episode rule much like schools. No one will thank you if you spread a vomiting bug round the office/staff and people start dropping like flies. If GP says it is only a UTI you’ve got today and the weekend for antibiotics to do their magic and for you to start feeling better ready for work on Monday

PinkDaffodil2 · 10/05/2019 09:13

If you’re worried about work not believing you then most GPs will print you off evidence of the consultation to show you attended which is fine, and can always be done at a later date if you need ‘proof’, but a MED 3 sick note form is explicitly not for this situation.
Also try to take a urine specimen in with you, if you arrive a bit early at the GP the receptionist will give you a bottle, it makes everything go a bit quicker once you’re seen.

blackcatclocks · 10/05/2019 09:14

I'm pregnant and had a UTI recently. I went to an out of hours appointment on the Sunday night and was back in work Monday morning feeling a million times better. You may need a week of antibiotics to treat the UTI but you certainly don't need a week off work.

Hollowvictory · 10/05/2019 09:14

Ri g work ASAP some have rules about calling before a certain time even if you are scheduled to start later

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 10/05/2019 09:16

Getting signed off for a week will do the opposite of help her FFS. In any case, the GP won't issue a fit note for the period of self-certification.

Appointment this morning and hopefully you will be back for Monday Flowers

I'd go to work with a UTI

🙄
Doesn't this wholly depend on your symptoms? I've had a UTI before where the only symptom I've had was needing to pee. I've also had a UTI where I was feverish, vomiting and generally felt like I was dying. The symptoms of a UTI are really varied.

Call in OP, I had an employee call in on the 2nd week of working for me - it didn't bother me at all. Would much rather he was recovering at home than feeling rotten and vomiting in the office! Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Wenttoseainasieve · 10/05/2019 09:25

I'd go to work with a UTI

Yes, with a bout of mild cystitis. With a kidney infection (fever, vomiting, back pain, weakness, shaking etc etc) no. There's a wide spectrum with uti and the OP sounds at the more unpleasant end tbh.

KarBB · 11/05/2019 21:30

I had to call in sick on day 2 of a job once as was vomiting all night & felt dreadful. I was mortified but it was genuine & necessary & I don't think I took a single other sick day in the year I worked there so I proved I wasn't a skiver! Get well soon!

DinosApple · 11/05/2019 21:46

Just call and let them know you're vomitting.
I once had six weeks off after two months in a job. I had gastric flu and lost a lot of weight (so they knew I was really ill). But I was lucky to keep my job.
