Has anyone ever successfully purged their wardrobe?

The amount of unworn, ill fitting clothing I own has started to give me real anxiety whenever I walk into my wardrobe. It's full of clothes that are there for sentimental reasons or price tags still attached or covered in pilling. But every time I go to purge it I only manage to get rid of a small bag of clothes to donate and hold on to the rest "just in case". I only really wear the same 15-20 things regardless of season.

I currently have 28 pairs of jeans but only wear four. I'm starting by getting rid of the twenty odd pairs that don't even fit my post baby body and keeping a couple in the size down in case I lose the new weight anytime soon.

But for the rest of it, any tips or tricks? I've tried turning the hangers around but it didn't inspire me to get rid of the stuff at the end of the time period. Currently I've removed everything from my wardrobe where it's going to sit on my bed and floor until I decide to go about this.

Has anybody had success at this?!

Do it when you're feeling good and strong, e.g. after sex or a run!

If you really really want to cull it, don't try and choose things to get rid of.
Approach it the opposite way.

Start from the premise that EVERYTHING is going out,, then pick out the things that you really want to keep /actually wear.

If that's too radical, bag up the stuff that doesn't get chosen but don't throw it out immediately, and see how happy you are with what's left.

I agree with @Breakfast. I took everything out of my wardrobe a week or so ago.

First I put back in the dresses I wear regularly and which are still in very good condition.

A couple of things went in a mending pile.

Then I tried on everything else, and if it didnt fit properly or was a bit tired, it went to the charity shop that afternoon.

Now I can actually see everything in there, and I feel lighter.

We've just had our bedroom decorated, had new fitted wardrobes and I had such a clear our, felt amazing.
I got some new wooden coat hangers, limited myself to 20.
I only have 20 items of clothes in my wardrobe!
