If you ate enough jam would it count as your five a day?

Obviously not going to chow down on a jar of jam instead of an apple but.... would it ever count as one of your five a day?

Although it’s seven a day now isn’t it? Or have they added even more when I wasn’t paying attention?

Yes, same for wine

horizontalis · 09/05/2019 20:00

Yes, definitely. Especially the ones with great lumps of strawberry in them.

Thick-cut marmalade too (and you get your vit C).

FictionalCharacter · 09/05/2019 20:07

Each of your 5 a day is an 80g portion. Jams tend to contain 50% fruit at best, the rest sugar, so you'd have to eat about 160g of jam. If you could keep it down and your bod could cope with that much sugar, bingo!

caramelinducedharikari · 09/05/2019 20:10

Grin That's a question from my own heart OP!

Aquamarine1029 · 09/05/2019 20:11

Perhaps, but then you would also get diabetes.

Tryingtogetitright · 09/05/2019 20:11

Apple pies count too

And Jaffa cakes

And cherry bakewells

And jam tarts

quite easy to eat five a day really...!

beela · 09/05/2019 20:11

Jam, wine, fruit cake, mince pies....

BrainScience · 09/05/2019 20:11

Fruit pastilles definitely count. So do Jelly Tots.

StCharlotte · 09/05/2019 20:15

My favourite thread title ever Grin

greatbigwho · 09/05/2019 20:16

I once worked out how much Vimto you'd need to drink for it to count as a serving of fruit juice

borntobequiet · 09/05/2019 20:17

Of course it would. Get stuck in.

Tumilnaughts · 09/05/2019 20:19

So this forest fruit topped cheesecake counts too then. Brilliant.
😁

caramelinducedharikari · 09/05/2019 20:24

Now take a carrot cake- defo one of your five a day.

LittleLongDog · 09/05/2019 20:37

I’m taking these responses as a big fat yes.

greatbigwho how much Vimto was it? I’ll add it to my five a day stockpile of jam.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 09/05/2019 20:39

sultana scone + jam = 2 of your 5 a day Grin

Passthecherrycoke · 09/05/2019 20:39

I’m quite interested to know 🤣 I’m going to say no I think, because surely the reason you need to eat F&V is for the vitamins and nutrients they contain and I can’t see there would be any left after your strawberries have been boiled to death

greatbigwho · 09/05/2019 20:56

I seem to remember it was something like 7L 😬

managedmis · 09/05/2019 20:59

Vimto counts?

Willowkoko · 09/05/2019 20:59

My DD is obsessed with jam so I’m going with yes.

AwkwardSquad · 09/05/2019 21:01

Yes, definitely. Also carrot cake.

managedmis · 09/05/2019 21:26

Vimto counts?

BrainScience · 09/05/2019 22:37

greatbigwho is that diluted or concentrate? It would get expensive but I could probably afford it for the good of my health.

ginnylicious12 · 09/05/2019 22:40

Sure it counts! Like a Terry's Chocolate Orange. at least that is what I tell myself at 2am when am chowing one down in secret....

SmarmyMrMime · 10/05/2019 00:34

Given how poor so much of the population's diet is, we must get some benefit from what I think of as "microportions" of fruit and veg. I'm definitely not claiming it's the healthy way to eat foods, but a bit of strawberry jam here, and sweetcorn in a pot noodle there must add up to some benefit, surely?

beela · 10/05/2019 13:57

An instructor at the gym once tried to convince me that a vegetable cupa soup was at least 3-4 portions of fruit & veg, on the basis that there was more than one type of vegetable in it Hmm

I think they believed it too.
