Is wearing a high coverage foundation, setting powder and black winged eyeliner everyday "too much"?

I'd hate to look diva-ish or be too fake in the sense that some people look dramatically different without all their makeup as it changes their face structure, features etc. entirely.

Whenever I get complimented on my looks, I do wonder if I might not get the same praise if I was completely barefaced so my question is whether high coverage cream foundation, translucent setting power and black winged eyeliner is a lot for daily wear or fairly the norm now?

I know I shouldn't care what people think etc. but it's bugged me for a while so was curious.

Tricky,it’s depends if it’s your signature look and how well applied it is
I have a friend has the look you describe, has done for years.
She doesn’t look over made up,and it’s not too goth
So I suppose if it’s well applied and looks good it’s ok
Applied like Marilyn Manson it’s full,on then it’s quite umm imposing

There is a huge spectrum of what’s normal. I don’t think there is one true “norm”.

I live in a city so there’s perhaps even more variety here than in some smaller communities, but I see lots of people in our school playground with a look along similar lines to you, and lots of others totally bare-faced, and everything in between.

There has just been a long thread on how to look “polished” - I think if it makes you able to face the day feeling good about yourself there is no reason not to do it. But there is only so much those cosmetics can do - believe me, if people are complimenting you on your looks I don’t think you need to worry that it’s just the cosmetics doing it.

It’s your face. Do what makes you happy.

Some people I know wear lots of makeup, some wear none, some minimal. I wear whatever I feel like each day.

In my opinion, heavy make-up is unflattering on anyone. I wear make-up every single day but it always looks natural. Foundation shouldn't be visible on your skin, it should simply enhance and smooth it. My opinion of course. I also believe that as a woman gets older, all heavy make-up does is make you look older. I get compliments on my skin very frequently, which is very kind, but not on how good my make-up looks, which is exactly what I'm going for. I personally don't want people to notice my make-up.

I agree totally that if you receive compliments on your look, then the bare-faced you can't be unattractive. It might be a good idea though, to go make-up free for just one day a week if you can, to allow your pores to breathe, but do wear a good SPF moisturiser then.

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2019 01:11

It's way too much for me, but I hardly wear makeup at all & have never felt the need to.

But it's your face so if you like it & think it looks good then why not?

Sarah242 · 08/05/2019 01:19

I don’t think it’s the norm, and I think any high coverage foundation would transform your face considerably.

That being said, I wear high coverage foundation every day because of skin issues. It might be “unflattering” on me as a previous poster has noted, but the alternative is far less flattering. You have to decide what’s important to you and go with it.

CarpetDiem · 08/05/2019 01:41

Sarah I agree, I have severe type 1 rosacea and need to wear camouflage makeup to cover it, whist I would love to be able to go out without it, I can't.

Thank you everyone so far for your replies, especially @mommybunny and @Soopuff for the reassurance :)

I'm also curious as to where people draw the line on what's considered "barely any/minimal make-up" vs very heavy makeup. Obviously, the two extremes are fairly easy to describe but the ones in the middle are more subjective e.g. someone who wears mascara, tinted moisturiser, eyeliner and lipgloss vs. someone who wears full coverage foundation, setting powder and eyeliner only, I guess.

MrMeSeeks · 09/05/2019 18:24

I wear a full coverage even though i have bothing to hide ( hot environment) and wear more than this! People always compliment me on my makeup ( love to wear diff eyelooks some days, others none at all).
I also regularly get i’d so it can’t be aging me to badly Wink
