Made redundant. Do you declare it at new job interviews?

When made redundant, company compulsory redundancy...5 people from some teams, some teams axed.

Do you mention this at job interviews?

I can't see why anyone would? Esp when Been at company for 13 year's!!

Wouldn’t that be your answer to why you were looking for a new job? Redundancy is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, especially these days

Ivy44 · 07/05/2019 18:51

There is no stigma attached to redundancy these days so yes I would mention it. Also mention that it’s not just you, a number of positions have gone, not just yours.

Good luck finding a new role.

AnotherEmma · 07/05/2019 18:52

If there were a lot of redundancies, I would consider being up front (eg if you can say "I was one of 50 employees who were made redundant").

If it was just you or a small number, I wouldn't mention the redundancy, and I'd just say something about wanting a new opportunity or whatever.

For mass redundancies it's obvious that the organisation needs to make big cuts. For a single person or small number I think it can sometimes be more of a reflection on the employee (rightly or wrongly).

I was "made redundant" once, btw, and it was just me, so I didn't mention it. I would have felt less embarrassed about it if there had been a lot of redundancies.

It’s nothing - I’d be more worried if someone gave an evasive obviously untrue answer. (Though the guy we had once who was very truthful and said he left because he had a fight with his boss was maybe going to far...)

moosesormeece · 07/05/2019 18:55

Yes of course! If you're evasive about why you're out of work people will assume you were sacked. Redundancy isn't your fault.

TedsFederationRep · 07/05/2019 18:58

I used to chair selection panels for a large organisation and it absolutely doesn't make any difference. In fact, if people who had been made redundant were employees like yourself with a fair amount of service who had been part of a sizeable redundancy exercise, I used to secretly will them to perform well on interview so they'd get through! After all, redundancy is something that could happen to any us.

Wishing you all the best in your quest for new employment.

Figgygal · 07/05/2019 18:58

Why wouldn't you?
It's a no fault situation for the individual so what's the concern?

titchy · 07/05/2019 19:06

Eh? Why wouldn't you mention it? Doesn't matter whether you're the only one being made redundant or if you're one of a thousand Confused Why do you think it should be kept quiet?

AnotherEmma · 07/05/2019 19:30

I think you're all quite naive, or maybe you've been fortunate never to work for a company that will make a person "redundant" because they want to get rid of them! I've come across plenty of situations in which someone is made redundant because they're a poor fit or just crap.

Not saying that's you, OP!

BrieAndChilli · 07/05/2019 19:35

I was made redundant because the company went bust so I’m that situation there was no reflection on me so I was completely honest about it

titchy · 07/05/2019 19:37

Not with 13 years service!

Maybe if someone had never managed to hold down a job for more than six months and had apparently been made redundant a dozen times, but reasonable lengths of service, nah fine.

AnotherEmma · 07/05/2019 19:45

Good point

FrangipaniBlue · 07/05/2019 20:16

I can't see why anyone would? Esp when Been at company for 13 year's!!

I can't se why anyone wouldn't, especially if specifically asked why they left x role?

I've been made redundant twice and while I wouldn't be the first the bring it up, I'd be truthful if asked.

I've been on the other side of the table and evasive answers are obvious and make me wonder even more whether there was a reason that person was selected for redundancy.

ABoozedMoose · 07/05/2019 20:24

Why on earth would anyone keep quiet about it? (especially as it is likely to be mentioned in a reference).

I've been made redundant twice and always said why if asked.

thewinkingprawn · 07/05/2019 20:29

In your case I would definitely mention it - a few redundancies no problem. However I might be less honest as per a PP if it was just me - i’m Afraid we’ve made roles redundant across various companies i’ve been at rather than go through painful performance management. And yes for people with years of service too. Not nice but less painful than months of PM.

Eateneasterchocsalready · 08/05/2019 19:37

Yes it's mass redundancy!!

I'm Very grateful for the replies giving background and perspective.

I've not experience this before and tend towards the negative to be honest...so was wondering whether I should mention it

Macaroonmayhem · 08/05/2019 19:43

Of course, if asked why I was moving. Both times it’s happened to me it was part of well-publicised circumstances at each company and I opted for VR. I made that clear, putting it as a positive choice/great opportunity to have a change of scene/new challenges (when really, it was a great chance to get a big payoff but I did not say that!)

Jayblue · 08/05/2019 19:45

I agree with 13 years service, mass redundancies and you're not the only one on your team, it won't be seen as a problem.

It would be much weirder and potentially viewed as a sign of dishonesty if you didn't mention it and then it was mentioned on your reference or your new employer figured it out. Is your current company big enough to be mentioned on local or national news?

I think any "no-fault" situation for leaving is much better than being evasive which could lead to interviewers thinking the truth is worse than it is.

I think it's a different situation to a one person redundancy after a year or two.

Eateneasterchocsalready · 08/05/2019 21:24

Yes it's in media
