I'm wondering if this is hormonal. Been about three weeks now. It's making me very self conscious.

Can't provide an answer about this, but am eagerly waiting for someone who can, things taste different to me since the menopause symptoms started and I was wondering if it was related.

“Burning Tongue

Changes in estrogen levels can cause a metallic taste in the mouth during menopause. This may also be accompanied by a pain or burning sensation on the tongue, lips, gums or other spot in the mouth. Scientists are still unclear as to the root cause of the pain and burning.”

Literally read this this morning on a list of 34 symptoms of menopause !

ParkingIInPlainSight · 07/05/2019 16:30

34 symptoms! Bloody hell.

Now I've read about burning tongue I'm sure I've got that too...

Any tips for getting rid of it?

vjg13 · 07/05/2019 18:08

I've had it, it comes and goes. Not actually had it for a while now.

YorkieTheRabbit · 07/05/2019 18:47

Yep, had it too, as vig13 said, it comes and goes Hmm oh the menopausal joy.

granadagirl · 07/05/2019 19:05

I’ve had it 2 yrs +. And been to dentist, oral consultant, Gp.
At first I thought it was anti depressant I’d changed to. Then I thought anxiety (although I’ve suffered on/off with anxiety over years and years) never ever had this symptom!!!

With me it’s burning tongue( like you’ve had hot soup hot cheese and burnt tongue) and metallic taste.

Thing I’ve got now is teeth aching it’s awful. Even bought mouth guide £200 !! And nothing changed.

I’ve read it’s oestrogen drop (menopause matters site)
Anxiety/stress

Dentist is now sending me to dental hospital! Mainly now because of aching, I’ve got used to tongue & taste(although not pleasant)
I know it’s not going to come of anything

There’s no test for it, and only treatment is antidepressant

Years ago my friend had this in pregnancy She kept having to spit in a tissue It was rank Anyhow I read an obscure article in a medical journal and outcome was macadamia nuts got rid of the horrible symptoms Worth a try maybe

ineedaholidaynow · 07/05/2019 21:24

I have this too. For me it comes and goes. Can be related to low B12 levels, although mine was fine. Dentist referred me to oral consultant and I had to mention burning tongue and hormones as he hadn't heard of it!

Also grind my teeth and that has got worse and have eaten through my mouth guard!

ParkingIInPlainSight · 07/05/2019 22:29

Is it worth going to the GP?

Redpostbox · 07/05/2019 22:41

Dentist rather than GP maybe.
I get the taste too. I get it in early pregnancy and also at certain points of my menstrual cycle.

granadagirl · 08/05/2019 10:32

Don’t how old you are? Menopausal age?

If so Gp to check hormone levels

As I’ve said, I’ve been both Gp, dentist oral consultant, there is no cure
Very annoying 😂
If your lucky, like some on here. It may just come and go.
Fluctuation of hormone or anxiety/stress levels

If you do get a cure, then please please write back
