Strange Vodafone transaction on DH statement

Myself and my husband share a few bank accounts that we both have access to online. There is one account just for direct debits and have noticed there is a £26 transaction every month come out since December. I barely look at the accounts but noticed it last week and mentioned it to him, he said he never noticed even though he checks his banking daily.

I have asked him time and time again to call them as if it’s a mistake that’s over £150 refund we are entitled to! He finally called today whilst I was out, he said Vodafone couldn’t track it down and my DH said he would cancel the direct debit and see what happens from there.

Why would you not tell Vodafone you are expecting a refund since they can’t even tell you what you are paying £26 a month for!!! I’m annoyed at DH, he’s making it seem like no big deal.

Has anyone been overcharged by Vodafone before?

He is showing odd behaviour but equally Vodaphone can be a pain when it comes to irregularities and trying to sort these out.

It took me ages to sort out a rogue account set up in either mine or my son’s name. (We have the same first name)

Can you not phone them?

FiremanKing · 07/05/2019 13:55

The direct debit will have a reference number so there is no reason why you cannot phone up and quote it

Hmmm6386 · 07/05/2019 13:57

I will try calling them. The account won’t be in my name so I know a lot of businesses refuse to speak to anyone other than the account holder, but il try

He wasn’t given one of those internet generator things they try and sell you with a phone contract to make the upfront price cheaper? Then Vodafone cancelled the phone contract but not the mobile data thing? Something like that?

FiremanKing · 07/05/2019 14:12

What is your gut feeling op?

The fact he was very reluctant to sort it out is what would concern me.

Chesntoots · 07/05/2019 15:18

I used to work for T-Mobile.

I had a lady ring up shouting and screaming about another line on her husband's account and obviously somebody in our company had taken out a phone fraudulently....you can guess the rest.

I felt sorry for her as what had really happened dawned on her part way through our conversation.

I would say second phone too

MegaClutterSlut · 07/05/2019 16:09

Make sure you check his car too op. I agree with others, it does look suspicious imo

frozenbanana · 07/05/2019 16:12

Vodafone charged me extra money for months after I cancelled my contract, still haven't gotten it back

englishdictionary · 07/05/2019 16:40

He is lying. There is no way £26 a month is leaving the account and he accepts Vodafone saying they don’t know what it’s for. The DD is to them, of course they know.

BalthazarImpresario · 07/05/2019 16:41

They won't speak to you unless he has named you on the account.
It won't be any text services etc unless he still has a contract running.
Only thing it might be is insurance. The systems Vodafone use now are appaling and even if they cancel the line the insurance often remains (never did it on the old one) and sometimes when an upgrade is done another policy will be added.
So if he had insurance this could be why he is still being charged (26 quid is 2xiphone or premium handset insurance)
Believe me customer services will not be able to trace it if an accou t is closed, as previously mentioned the system is fucking terrible.
Until recently I work customer facing for them for 20 years. You'd thing the network systems in 2019 would be superior to those in 2000, but no, very poor decisions made.

Just an option aside from the 2nd phone thing.

AginNAgin · 07/05/2019 16:47

Since you have access to the account online, check to see whether he has cancelled the direct debit.

caringcarer · 07/05/2019 16:50

Could Vodaphone been charging you insurance without you realising?

caughtinanet · 07/05/2019 16:54

If he's taken out a contract on a 2nd phone he won't just be able to cancel it, does he have his own bank account that he could transfer it to?

I'd allow the possibility of a mistake by vodaphone unless he's really stupid enough to set up an affair phone on your joint account.

My phone isn't with vodaphone but my DD doesn't have any recognisable reference on it neither does a contract I pay for my DC with a different phone company, I don't think you'll find out much from the statement itself.

caughtinanet · 07/05/2019 16:57

To be fair to vodaphone if someone rings them and asks about a DD but doesn't know what it's for I can believe that they might not be able to trace it.

Depending on how they keep their information if it's a mistake how would they track it down? Would call centre staff be able to look it up by bank account number?

nrpmum · 07/05/2019 17:03

On face value you can do a direct debit indemnity which will claim back all of the direct debits if a valid claim.

KittyLane1 · 07/05/2019 18:37

I doubt it is an affair phone tbh. He would get a cheap PAYG or cheap contract, £26 a month is kinda pricey.

Although calling when you are not in is very odd

Trying81 · 07/05/2019 19:48

Could it be for an iPad? I pay £26 for one each month
