Anyone broken a bone before? Particularly recently?

So I managed to fracture my calcaneus (heel bone) yesterday - first bone I've ever broken in my 43yrs on this planet.
Pain levels at rest are perfectly manageable (I'd class as discomfort rather than pain) but I keep getting weird waves of panic over not being able to flex/extend my ankle (in a cast). It's like a very specific localised claustrophobia. I'm trying to get a bunch of paperwork done for work before I'm officially signed off sick (my community job involves driving) and it's very distracting!
Anyone else had this or am I just a bit weird?!

14 bones and counting (bone disease). I used to hate the sensation of my broken elbow bumping against a cast blerghhhhhh

Broke my wrist at Christmas and I know what you mean about the claustrophobic feeling! You adjust to it very quickly though, then it feels so so strange when the cast is removed. Also my wrist was agony to move after my cast came off. I was convinced something was horribly wrong as I don't remember that happening when I broke bones as a child. The hospital were correct felt better over a few weeks until it was all fine again.

Blimey thisnamechanger that sounds grim - poor you! Hope you stay break-free for as long as possible.

roomba is your wrist ok now? Back to normal almost? I'm dreading having a perma-"dodgy ankle" - determined to do my physio etc when time comes.

I've broken many bones but only ones that can't be immobilized so I can't speak for the cast claustrophobia. But with physio and dedicated exercise after your foot will be back to normal again don't worry!

I have experienced that and I completely understand what you mean. It was horrible feeling like my arm and hand were in some kind of papier mache straight jacket. It also drove me mad that I couldn't scratch my arm. I kept sticking biros down the cast to scratch it and my arm was covered with blue lines when they took it off. I hope it's a normal break and you only have to have it on for the minimum time though? I can only really suggest trying to think your way out of it when you feel panicky by thinking yes, that's right, I mustn't move it because it needs to heal and if I don't have this thing on, I would be moving it and then that would be counterproductive. Sorry I can't help more

Yeah, broke my ankle a year ago and suffered the same, felt slightly panicky about not being able to move my ankle, exactly like you describe it like ankle claustrophobia! Thankfully it passed really quickly, hope yours does too.

Also after I got the cast off, I had the opposite was panicky that my ankle was now free to move about the place! That passed fairly quickly too after some physio!

So cast/joint claustrophobia is a thing and it'll get less panicky - this makes me feel better already! Thank you! I'm hoping it's a fairly uncomplicated break - will find out more at fracture clinic in a week when they change my cast (apparently to accommodate swelling going down), but as they didn't whisk me away for surgery or anything dramatic like that I'm thinking it should be ok.
Very cross and upset with myself that I managed to mess up the simple joy of clambering over some rocks with DS (9yo), seems he has a better risk radar than me!
