To wish I was rich so I could live in London

... and have a stunningly modern house or flat. Fill it with art and spend my days writing and studying, going to art galleries and museums and just taking in all the culture about ...ah the dream

I think it is great. Pity MNers in the know say that the area is shit. But surely an influx of people able to afford the apartments are going to change the demographics quite a bit ?

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 07/05/2019 03:57

That apartment is beautiful! Expensive though, considering it a Leasehold.

I, too, would love to be able to afford to live in London. Marylebone, to be exact.

Does anybody here live in Marylebone?

Pinkarsedfly · 07/05/2019 04:08

Don’t live there, but got married there on Sunday!

(Sorry, still in chuffed mode).

I know what OP means. Every time I visit London I get the same urge to move in. Doesn’t help that DH (oooooooooh! First time I’ve written that!) lived there for most of the nineties and had a bloody great time.

GirlRaisedInTheSouth · 07/05/2019 04:14

Congrats on your wedding @Pinkarsedfly.

BasiliskStare · 07/05/2019 05:04

@succulentleaf - this is completely hypothetical because I could not afford that flat but in your link to the modern house top right picture - the kitchen looks like if you are doing any cooking or prep , you have to have your back to the people sitting in the kitchen ( who I grant will be looking over a great view ) but this is supposed to be architect designed and if a house is a machine for living in I don't think that works. ( Well makes me feel better for not being able to afford it anyway - so Grin )

Is it round the corner from Wormwood Scrubs ? I do remember Jeremy Hardy once joking about Clapham / Wandsworth areas being referreed to as "between the prisons" in Estate agent terms Grin

PawPawNoodle · 07/05/2019 08:08

@Ferfeckssake if anything it makes it worse! Hackney went through a huge 'let's tart everything up and make people actually want to live there!' drive around the time of the Olympics. All it meant is that the graffiti was cleaned up and untold shops catering to a richer demographic opened, neither of which appealed to people that have grown up there nor were they places that poorer people felt comfortable or financially able to shop at.

Oh, and the almost triple-fold in rent and house prices effectively marginalising those in the community even more, let's not forget that!

LoafofSellotape · 07/05/2019 08:13

That's really nice OP I can really see the appeal,it's been really nicely done.

Shmithecat2 · 07/05/2019 08:34

I'd like to be rich enough to own a house or garden flat in London (I like my own outside space..) and use it for the weekend or occasions. Wouldn't want to live there full time though. I'm a countryside kind of girl.

Racheyg · 07/05/2019 08:43

I wouldn't live there in fantasy land as I have two kids who would be climbing the walls.

I would love to live around kings cross area. Dh works in great Portland street and it won't take long for me to get to Hampstead.

I also love the parks and canal. I'm not a fan of west London

Racheyg · 07/05/2019 08:44

But my reality is I live East London/Essex borders have a mid terrace house which needs lots of work. 😂

BeautifulMaudOHara · 07/05/2019 08:57

I like the Knightsbridge house but theres no storage :middle aged alert: although I suppose you could turn a bedroom into a dressing room.

Agree about Shepherds Bush, urgh.

I’d like one of the stucco regency houses in Regents Park. And a driver. And a housekeeper and a personal chef.

I used to live in Barnet. We moved because we got sick of a tiny house with paper thin walls ( honestly you could hear the sound of the neighbours spoon hit their cereal bowl and the ping of their microwave) and dog poo all over the paths plus needles in the local park with the broken swings. I do miss the multicultural aspect and the every few minutes buses that rocked up outside my local sainbos that was just a 2 minute walk away.

LoafofSellotape · 07/05/2019 09:22

Cornwall Terrace looks amazing!Envy

Myfanwyprice · 07/05/2019 09:34

For as long as I can remember my dream has been to live in one of those lovely houses by Regents Park and to work in London Zoo, I’ve never quite worked out how I would afford one on a zookeepers wage, and there’s the small problem of being scared of quite a lot of animals. I’m sure these things could be ironed out though 😬

DonkeyHohtay · 07/05/2019 09:37

You'd need to pay me £4 million to live in London.

llangennith · 07/05/2019 09:45

It's in Shepherds Bush. It'll take a fair few years to change the demographics in that area😂

fussychica · 07/05/2019 10:07

My fantasy London home is a totally soundproofed penthouse directly overlooking the Thames, probably between Tower Bridge and Tate Britain with a huge balcony/roof garden. I would then become a member at all the galleries and spend my time visiting various exhibitions and museums on miserable days.

I live in a bungalow in Wiltshire so it ain't gonna happenGrin

I know Covent Garden is a bit of a cliche and get's very busy, but it's very convenient. I like the roof garden, and feel this place has potential. Maybe could knock a bit off the price? I need some money left over for my UK beachside retreat and my place on the Med.

runoutofnamechanges · 07/05/2019 11:05

@GirlRaisedInTheSouth

I live in Marylebone! And my walls are covered floor to ceiling in (non-valuable) art. Unfortunately I'm not rich though... Grin

I swapped the countryside to come back to London because I'm happier in a teeny tiny flat that I spend hardly any time in because there are a million more interesting things to do outside my home rather than living in a house in the country that had a million things inside (and out) that needed doing to take care of it. It's galleries over gardening any day for me!

Gingernaut · 07/05/2019 13:07

Every time I go down to London, there's more to do advertised on the walls of one Tube station platform, than I can find in the local weekend 'what's on' pages. 😢

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 07/05/2019 16:46

I like the flat but the area’s a bit grim and TV Centre is now full of nobbers - there’s a branch of Soho House and it’s wall-to-wall media types with MacBooks.

I used to live in a nice (but not at all swanky) flat in Central London and went to restaurants and galleries all the time. Then I had my daughter and moved to the burbs. It feels like another life now!

Ferfeckssake · 08/05/2019 08:59

But merrymouse .What about those horrible green curtains?! So I think I won't bother putting in an offer Grin

Ferfeckssake · 08/05/2019 09:02

Runoutofnamechanges That would be my ideal arrangement.

Drinkandknowthings · 08/05/2019 09:53

somethingonce where I live that’s almost exactly how horses work. Spot better grazing over a hedge and off they go. I’ve had horses, cattle and sheep invade my field! I don’t own any of the above.
