How do you pay for holidays to America?

MummyCool19 · 06/05/2019 17:17

We really want to go America soon. Looking more for Florida area I think. But my god how do you pay £5k for a holiday 😩. On paper we can afford it, we have a good disposable income but my god we can not save 😂😩. Plus how much spending money do you take?

But at no point have I said it could be done for £5k for four though I think it could certainly be if you don't stay on property. I detailed only my own experiences. I'm lost at the point you are actually making tbh.

I've just worked out that for four it would have cost around £6500. Still no where near £10-20k.

I'm sorry you don't like being tackled for making silly assertions but it's done now so I am going to leave it there as I am finding your strenuous attempts to convince me I am wrong about the cost of my own holiday rather tiresome. Perhaps you could start an argument with someone else on the thread, who told you were wrong, if you still have some irritation you want to take out on someone?

SherlockSays · 06/05/2019 20:51

I love DLP, will be going in 2021 when we tour France.. but it's not a patch on Orlando.

BallyHockeySticks · 06/05/2019 20:55

I assume you and I are making very different choices with our spending Delatron but our spending money didn't add up to several thousand. It just didn't.

I'm sure you could spend an absolute fortune eating out multiple times a day with drinks and snacks in between, but you don't have to. We ate out on average once every other day. Over a fortnight that is not thousands of pounds.

Copperandtod · 06/05/2019 20:58

I agree with delatron. Been to Florida 5 times family of 6. Stayed in various places - some budget some more expensive. All in easily £20000. A lot was spent on food but we ate out for breakfast lunch tea and snacks and shopped quite a bit too. Could probably do it for £10000 but would find it more difficult

Impatienceismyvirtue · 06/05/2019 21:04

We went to Miami last year - DH, me and our 10 month old. We flew business (mainly because of the baby) and stayed in a fantastic AirBNB that was actually very reasonably priced. The whole holiday cost about £9k so it was one we saved for over the course of about 12 months. I don’t really understand what you’re asking. If you want to go, you’ll have to save money. Of course you can if you try hard enough Hmm
If you fail, no holiday. You’re an adult, I’m sure you can figure it out. Also - have another look at your costing. £5k seems a bit.... tight.

whycantIthinkofadecentusername · 06/05/2019 21:04

Book it more than a year in advance. Stop all unnecessary spending. Shop around. I booked flights, car and hotel through tui. Park tickets through another vendor. Plus it's a goal. Something to look forward to. And my god after DS's last 6 years of life he's bloody well having a magical holiday. I'd rather have memories and experiences than stuff.

I've been slated by people when they asked where we are going, let alone when I say we fly on his birthday. Asked if I had better things to spend the money. Soon shut up when I tell them the reason why.

Minniemousejammies · 06/05/2019 21:09

I can’t get my head round £10k for a holiday. I’m not having a go at anyone or judging but my goodness when you think about it it’s just surreal. I know it’s all relevant to salaries though.

Delatron · 06/05/2019 21:09

What’s the silly assertion? That Florida is expensive and can cost £10-20k?

You’ve just admitted your holiday would have been £6,500 for 4 and that’s without all the extras. It’s easy to see how it could get to £10k.

The OP seemed to think £5k to Florida was standard for 4 people. I don’t think it’s silly to point out it’s hard to do it for that and it can end up a lot more....

MeganChips · 06/05/2019 21:10

If you can bear it OP consider breaking up the flights.

We did Florida in 2017, 5 of us for 2 weeks in an offsite 3 bed villa in August cost £3200 and we had a 2 hour change in Montreal.

Park tickets can be done cheaper, we did 1 day 1 park tickets for Disney and Universal and cost 2k.

I dread to think how much we spent spending money wise though. Another 2k easily but it can be done more cheaply if you are willing to break up your flights and stay offsite.

MeganChips · 06/05/2019 21:12

Sorry my point being that breaking up the flights saved us a fortune!

CarolDanvers · 06/05/2019 21:21

I haven't "admitted" anything. I considered your point and came back with a reply to it. I'm not guilty of anything so how can it be an admission? Are you aware of how adversarial you have been this thread? Look at the language you're using. I said nothing directly to you. I asked one mild question querying those prices. I detailed my own experience only and expressed one question of surprise that people were saying it could cost £10-20k as I couldn't see it. I didn't even address you. You seemed to take my post very personally and came along and snarked at me repeatedly for no real reason that I could see and still are. I'd have been just as happy to have no interaction with you whatsoever. You sought it out with repeated comments and allusions to me not being honest or realistic about costs/budgeting and "sticking my head in the sand". I don't agree with you, your experience is not my experience. Do you get as angry as this in real life if people haven't done things exactly how you have? I rather suspect you do. I'm not going to respond to you anymore. To get SO aggressive about someone disagreeing with you is a bit strange I think and I don't want to engage any further thanks.

jazzytoes · 06/05/2019 21:27

We just paid 5200 for flights, acco, car and park tickets for 4. Not sure why some are spending 20k...

We allow $150 a day for food.

OP, Thomas cook are doing a DD option, great offer on the new endless resorts universal hotel. £220 pcm for 4 people, flights and accom.

Delatron · 06/05/2019 21:29

What are you disagreeing with though? That Florida can be expensive? I have no idea what you are ranting about.

You said £10k for Florida is ridiculous. I say for 4 people it can easily add up to that. So yes we do disagree ... nothing more to add really.

Delatron · 06/05/2019 21:31

$150 a day for food for 14 days is $2100?

MummyCool19 · 06/05/2019 22:07

Sorry, that was a hotel and flights, not spending money or park tickets. We aren’t really wanting to go Disney. More orlando and just other things Florida has to offer

TheTreeHearsYourSecret · 06/05/2019 22:18

If you want something you will find a way, if you are not bothered you will find an excuse.

And yes we go to Florida.

As I am the person spending money (SAHM) I choose not to spend on things we don't need. I might want them, but I don't need them. The money goes toward something I want more than the other crap I might like. Hence, Florida, Disney, Universal, we love it.

But yes it is expensive and the exchange rate is crap so the cost has shot up. Disney park ticket for 14 nights for 4 (children are classed as adults at 10) is £1700. That is before everything else.

If you want to do it as cheaply as possible then you stay offsite. It is clearly more expensive to stay in the Disney bubble.

We looked at Europe this summer and it was £6k for 2 adults and 2 teens. Wasn't that much more to go to Florida, so we are going again.

ChoudeBruxelles · 06/05/2019 22:20

Were planning to go to Canada the tear after next. Will probably have one, cheap uk holiday next year. We usually go to Europe twice.

I reckon to do what we want in Canada will cost us £7k.

stucknoue · 06/05/2019 22:27

Saving, never borrow for a holiday. It's easier if you have a savings account and a standing order on pay day. The US isn't cheap though, expect to pay significantly more for most things even ignoring transport costs - not a place to visit on a budget

stucknoue · 06/05/2019 22:28

Ps we spent about £4K last year but only paid for 2 flights as dh was away on business prior

cheeseandcrackers77 · 06/05/2019 22:34

You can get 10 days stay at a Disney moderate hotel with free dinning and park tickets for 2a 2c for £3400. You can also get flights for 4 for £1100 all in (BA Sale) as we have done this not that long ago. So yes Disney can be done for around 5k you just need to shop around.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/05/2019 01:36

Our Florida trip cost around £12,000 for 16 nights, 2 adults, 3 early teens, included a two night stay in Miami.

SpaceCadet4000 · 07/05/2019 03:08

By not going to Florida! When we lived in the UK we never did the US on more than £2,500 by looking for flight deals, camping/AirBnB etc. We also always save- we have never put a holiday on plastic.

drspouse · 07/05/2019 07:44

Yes I don't get the obsession with Florida at all, there are so many lovely states (and I've been to Florida).

BuntyCollocks · 07/05/2019 09:29

We’ve paid about £3800 - villa is £600 per family between us and our friends, Disney tickets £1000 as we upgraded my dh to an annual pass last year for both the parking privileged and because we knew we were going back. We got flights for the 4 of us for £1800. Car here is £400. We got annual universal passes last year so don’t have that to pay. Planning on packing lunches daily and usually eating dinner at the villa, though there are a lot of kids eat free places in Florida on certain nights. Biggest expense will be my Diet Coke habit in Disney 😂😂 in universal we get a couple of the refillable mugs and just top them up constantly ($10 a day I think?)

It can be as expensive as you make it. There are ways to make it affordable once you get your basics (tickets, accommodation and flights) sorted. We found it actually more affordable if you back to back 2 years with the park tickets and upgrade at least one person to an annual pass - free parking, discounts in restaurants and on merch.

Hollowvictory · 07/05/2019 09:30

Florida is more like £10k.
We save.
If you don't want to save then it's hard to see how you can go.
