Cradle cap on my 4yo!

My 4yo ds has always had cradle cap, from a few months old right up to now. It’s never bothered him, not itchy or anything so I’m not concerned from that perspective but I don’t want him getting bullied as he starts school in September.

Has anyone ever had similar with such an old child? Everything online says it just clears up on its own except in our case it hasn’t. He’s regularly bathed and hair washed and dried, but he has eczema so I feel like his skin is prone. I just don’t know what to do to shift it.

Any words if wisdom, experiences or advice much appreciated!

Baby oil on his head overnight, it’ll brush off in the morning. Might need to shampoo it a few times after

My eldest Dd had it until she was about 6!

Hi! My ds till 4 or 5. Huge big scabby clumps of it. The only thing I found that worked was a load of coconut oil rubbed in to his scalp and left in over night then washed out in morning. It was pretty messy but only took 1 try!

My DS was exactly the same and I tried loads of different creams and oils over the years. Eventually it got itchy and was bothering him, so I took him to the doctor. The thing that finally got rid of it for good was a prescription shampoo from the doctor called dandrazol. It worked quickly and has never come back.

Thanks for the responses,

I’ve got coconut oil in the cupboard so I’ll try that tonight.

Reassuring to know we’re not the only ones!

My ds is 5 and still has it, the only person who has ever noticed is the hairdresser! A friend told me last week that head and shoulders helped sort her sons out, I'm going to try it. She said she washed his hair with it every day for a week and now just uses normal shampoo then head and shoulders about every 10 days.

I also read a while ago that having cradle cap into childhood can be a sign of an intolerance to something but I've never investigated any further

Hellbentwellwent · 05/05/2019 11:52

jessica that really interesting re intolerances. He does get sore tummies a lot and we’ve been to the docs about coeliac.hes a canny wee soul though and we need a poo sample... he holds it till we’re out of the house so he can poo!

He and his sister also both had awful reflux as babies and I wonder now in hindsight if that was partly dairy intolerance... I’ve switched to oat milk so maybe that’ll help.

My dd had it until she was about 6 and then it just went

Just an update in case anyone is in the same position. We caked his head in castor oil for a couple of hours before bath time twice and washed his hair in head and shoulders and it’s gone! First go took most of it and he second time cleared it. Gave him a good long head massage in the bath each time with the head and shoulders and can’t believe the difference. I read a couple of different things re what oul to use but couldn’t find coconut oil though I knew there was some in the house somewhere, had castor oil and thought why not. Smile

I know it was an old post but you don't need a poo sample for a celiac test. My DS had a blood test for it. They probably want a stool sample to rule out other things first.

I see your update that it's gone but just wanted to say my mum used BP Olive Oil on all 5 of us back in the 50's - 80's.

Back in the 50's it was only available at chemists. No-one would have dreamt of eating it (but not extra virgin so probably would have tasted yuck)
