But importantly do they go to waste in your house, as they do in mine ?

For the most part, yes. We don't eat huge amounts of bread anyway so its not just the ends that go in the food waste bin

maddiemookins16mum · 05/05/2019 10:21

The end slices, I like as toast. Otherwise I freeze them for breadcrumbs as the make the best sort.

GabrielleNelson · 05/05/2019 10:24

The heel is the best bit on a crusty loaf or a gorgeous Scottish plain loaf! I don't understand why anybody would refuse to eat them. If you don't want them in a sandwich, fair enough, but they're still good toasted.

GabrielleNelson · 05/05/2019 10:26

I hate wasting food. Bread is almost never wasted here. It keeps very well in the freezer so that's what I do if I don't think we're going to get through a loaf quickly. Defrosts extremely quickly too if it was sliced before going in. Slices can be toasted from frozen.

Scottish plain bread is the best bread ever. In fact Scottish bakery goods (proper morning rolls, proper Snowballs, Scotch pies etc) are some of my favourite things. I’ve been known to go into a bakers next to Glasgow Central and fill a bag for life for the journey home.

Crusts are the best bit. Especially toasted and slathered in butter.

Doje · 05/05/2019 10:59

Sometimes I eat them, sometimes I whizz them up into breadcrumbs and freeze them. I keep a tub in my freezer which I just add to.

UnRavellingFast · 05/05/2019 11:09

Crusts on tasty loaves are fab slathered in butter and -my top tip- sprinkle of salt and pepper and sometimes- though not always- a slight squeeze of lemon.

Boring crusts from hovis and the like are great as cheese on toast as their extra toughness give a great crunch to contrast with the cheese. Just make sure you toast the back end before toasting the cheese side so it's crunchy enough. Another note on toasted cheese. Spread ketchup on bread before grating cheese on.

Crusts are the best bits.

ForalltheSaints · 05/05/2019 11:10

Yes I do. Why would you not?

megletthesecond · 05/05/2019 11:11

Of course.
They're perfect for soup.

Zduse · 05/05/2019 11:15

I hate waste, I eat them or if I'm not feeling it they get turned into bread crumbs for stuffing etc

Jux · 05/05/2019 11:21

DH won't eat them, and thre were quite a few arswhere wouldn't really allow me to either. Everyone ignores his view on crusts these days, though he will still get cross if someone eats the first one of the loaf.

EleanorReally · 05/05/2019 11:25

why not?
i dont really eat sandwiches, just toast at the weekend and no one else likes them

Depends on the loaf. Lovely, fresh from baker, crusty load, hell yes. Favourite here is to slather with butter and nutella. Bog standard sliced loaf from the supermarket, no, they go into the blender for breadcrumbs. Often they end up in the food waste because they hide in the bottom of the bread bin and merrily grow their own eco-systems.

Aragog · 05/05/2019 11:30

I eat them if they're nice big chunky ones. Lightly toasted with slathers of butter - delicious.

If it's just a really thin little bit it gets thrown.

cwg1 · 05/05/2019 11:51

Crusts are lovely and eating them makes your hair curl Smile

RavenLG · 05/05/2019 11:54

I’d only eat crust with lurpack on and a bag of quavers. Or Crusts for toast with peanut butter and jam.

SillySallyStruthers · 05/05/2019 12:26

Weird, just having a conversation about this with DP saying the crusts are the best bit IMO

PinkBuffalo · 05/05/2019 12:36

I don't eat the ends so I'm afraid they do get thrown. But I rarely buy bread ( keep a loaf in the freezer for when I fancy toast) and I hardly waste anything else so I don't get too stressed about it

Katinski · 05/05/2019 13:33

Crusts definitely the best bitSmile

DS1 was upset, the other night, and didn't eat any dinner. 8 took him up a thick, Crispy, crust from a loaf fairly fresh from the breadmaker, which he demolished, despite looking furious with me for taking it to him.

DramaAlpaca · 05/05/2019 13:43

We fight over them in our house, they're the best bit.

PrincessScarlett · 05/05/2019 13:47

I love the crusts/end bits, definitely the best part of the loaf.
