Hit me with your best toothache remedies!

Been up since 6am with the worst toothache I've ever had. It's caused by an abcess, I'm on antibiotics then back to the dentist in a couple of weeks for a root canal. But please, please wise MNers, share your best toothache remedies I can try until then, or it's going to be the longest couple of weeks of my life!

I've got ibuprofen, paracetamol, extra strength orajel and clove oil (not all at the same time of course) but nothing is really touching it. Any thing else I could try?

The big red liquid capsule nurofens are good, as is cocodamol.

Pishposhpasher · 05/05/2019 08:51

You need cocodamol.

MustardScreams · 05/05/2019 08:53

Getting blind drunk when I had an abscess in my wisdom tooth was the only thing that worked. Obviously I do not recommend this!

Cocodamol usually helps more than other meds I’ve found.

sorry I'm not much help as I was going to recommend clove oil on a cotton bud dabbed straight on offending tooth, then swapped all around surrounding gums tastes utterly disgusting

Hollylolly28 · 05/05/2019 08:55

Salt water rinses, corsodyl mouthwash and I remember getting ibuprofen with codine in boots which really helped. Also try sitting up or with extra pillows apparently lying flatter doesn't help if none of that helps hold ice on it will numb it for a while anyway. Hope you feel better soon

Processedpea · 05/05/2019 08:57

Ibuprofen with codeine is great but hope your anti biotics kick in soon

Cameron2012 · 05/05/2019 08:59

Oil of cloves, cheap, tastes foul but anethetises your whole mouth

BearSoFair · 05/05/2019 08:59

Thanks all. Are there brands for cocodamol, like nurofen for ibuprofen etc, as all I can see is Boots own which contains sorbitol - a no go with my IBS! Although at the moment I think the upset stomach might be more tolerable than the toothache...

Will also pick up some Corsodyl and try sleeping propped up tonight. It definitely seems worse if I'm lying down.

Oops sorry missed that on your original post 😖

sav93 · 05/05/2019 09:00

Marijuana

slipperywhensparticus · 05/05/2019 09:00

Abcess is warm salt rinses and clove oil

Iwantmychairback · 05/05/2019 09:01

Came on here to say that the only thing that worked for me was large amounts of Brandy.
Looks like someone before me also tried this method!!

BearSoFair · 05/05/2019 09:01

Ahh it's ok, I've found some without sorbitol!

I had the same just before Easter and absolutely nothing touched it except cold water for a few moments. I didn't sleep for two nights because of the pain. The antibiotics luckily made a difference about 12 hours after the first dose and after about 24 hours the pain was gone. It was the worst pain I ever had and I gave birth twice with only gas and air.

thyroidblood · 05/05/2019 09:03

Clove oil x

thyroidblood · 05/05/2019 09:04

Haha done the same thing as PP

BearSoFair · 05/05/2019 09:05

Yep Ignecoccus I think I agree, I can't remember anything being quite this bad. Broke my ankle a few years ago, that was awful but at least it wasn't constant pain for days! I'm on the 4th day of antibiotics with no change so far Sad Will send DH out to Boots at 11 though.

feliciabirthgiver · 05/05/2019 09:06

You need to go to a pharmacy to ask for the co-codamol at the counter, there is no so specific brand but the pharmacist needs to dispense it to you, you can't buy it from the shelf.

Thanks I hope you feel better soon

Igneococcus · 05/05/2019 09:10

I walked around with a bottle of water constantly because it was the only thing that made any difference. How did people before modern medicine cope with this? It must have been awful and would have killed quite a few without effective infection control.

Igneococcus · 05/05/2019 09:11

What antibiotics are you on?

Igneococcus · 05/05/2019 09:16

You really should see a difference after 4 days worth of antibiotics. Maybe you need different ones or the dose is wrong for you.

BearSoFair · 05/05/2019 09:30

It's 500mg amoxicillin. Maybe I need to try and get another appointment...

BearSoFair · 05/05/2019 09:32

There's definitely less swelling but the pain doesn't seem any different!

Igneococcus · 05/05/2019 09:37

I had Metronidazole (no alcohol for that).
I'd go back to doctor/dentist. I know they always say give it 7 days but with that kind of pain they then need to give you some serious pain relief as well. I really feel for you, fingers crossed you feel better soon.

WhipMaWhopMaGate · 05/05/2019 09:39

If you can find an open pharmacy buy some Oragel and rub it on the gum and offending tooth. It will numb the area for a fair while, and calm things down.
I'm in a similar situation so know your pain!
