Help me make my living room less of a waiting room!

So - have a large-ish living room, square but leads off into the kitchen (Open plan). Dark Wood floor. Magnolia walls with a single 'Stone' coloured wall. All too bland. One lovely oil-painting done by my Aunt which is of flowers in vibrant, clashing yellows, pinks, purples, red .

Current layout - come into room (Door in one corner) and i have a charcoal-grey corner sofa. More of a 3seater with a Chaise on the end taking it along the back wall a bit. Problem is that if I have friends over, we sit in a line of 3 on the sofa, and it's not great for chatting! (Good for TV watching tho).

I would like to replace the corner sofa - have been looking at 2 x 2-seater sofas are right angles to each other - would this look like a waiting room, d'you think? Looking at this one in Grey and one in the olive or yellow.
Or this one in similar colours.

The advantage of those is that they are cheap!

Also looking at that which looks cosier but I would have slate and blackberry?

Help me! I have only got a max of 250cm along this wall, so if I have them at right angles I have to account for the width of one and the depth of the other, IYSWIM. I'd ideally like to have a table in the corner with a table lamp on it, for more 'ambience', which is why I'm veering away from another corner sofa.

Blackberry sofa, pink, red and yellow cushions to match colours in the painting.

Can you do I diagram with measurements. My first instinct would be area rug with coffe table and either sofa with chairs opposite or sofas opposite with chairs forming a horse shoe. But from the way you describe it you don’t seem to have much space? Do you have other furniture in there?

BogglesGoggles · 04/05/2019 18:47

Wpuldso suggest getting one of each style. Otherwise it looks very matchy

Don't buy 2-seater sofas. I did and it was a very bad mistake. You can't lie on them if you/anyone else are/is ill. You may think you're not ill very often. I'm not and don't have time off work, but I obviously don't feel 100% sometimes or the DC don't and there was nowhere to slob.

We've now got a large corner sofa with 2 recliners. It's ace. We don't have the waiting room feeling because people always sit on each end of the sofa now.

palahvah · 05/05/2019 09:25

Have you tested out those sofas? Those styles - more upright and firm than something you can relax on - look exactly like the kind of thing I'd expect in a waiting room!
2 things that make a room feel less like a waiting room are different textures and not too matchy-matchy colours. Have you considered a rug?

ptumbi · 05/05/2019 11:50

I'll try to post a diagram - the area is literally a corner, with about 250cm along one wall. The other is a good 5m so I could have a 2seater then a 3 seater? I don't have any other furniture in the room apart from TV in opposite corner.

I already have a rug - quite large, cream with green leaves. This sits in front of the corner sofa ATM. I don't want a coffee table in front of the sofas - I would be forever tripping over it! And I hate clutter and too much furniture. (and then wonder why it's not cosy...Grin)
I get the idea of slobbing, or as an extra bed, but I do have a spare room for extra guests, and don't slob very often., I also get the 'upright and firm' and I think you are right. The Harveys one looks more sofa-like (as opposed to waiting room) and cosier. More expensive too!

Sounds like my living room - I have a couple of storage cubes and a folding coffee table. When guests come I pull the cubes out from the wall and put out the coffee table.

Sofas that face each other are best for chatting

longearedbat · 05/05/2019 12:04

The only thing I would say about sofas is don't buy one unless you've checked it out personally for comfort. I bought a sofa online and, although it looked lovely, it wasn't particularly comfy.
I once had two 2 seaters. It was very annoying not to be able to lie full length on either, so they didn't stay too long.
Can you post a pic?

ptumbi · 05/05/2019 12:17

Single - I can't really put them opposite; the room is quite long (as I said, about 5m) and leads into the kitchen which is at right angle to the living room, at the bottom. Having the sofas opposite, I wouldn't be able to see the TV!

The only other thing I though of is maybe keeping the corner sofa, but getting a tub chair/cuddle chair opposite and down towards the kitchen. That wouldn't block the flow of traffic or the sight to the TV.

I've got a corner sofa. My lounge would need major reorganizing to have sofas facing e o. I got a reclining chair which makes it a bit better.

Redyoyo · 05/05/2019 15:04

Can't you keep sofa you have and buy an accent chair? It doesnt have to be very big and it would break up the corridor feeling. Make it a bright colour, ikea have a mustard wing chair for about £200/300 my dh has these in his work clubhouse and they are very comfy and look fab.

floraloctopus · 05/05/2019 15:10

We have a 3 seater sofa on the right hand wall as you walk in and then a a coffee table in front of it plus two arm chairs at right angles to the sofa. The TV is in the corner so you can see it from the sofa and one of the other chairs easily and they are well positioned for talking.

ptumbi · 06/05/2019 16:50

I could do that floraloctopus along the back wall. The TV is opposite so could work.

However.... I have been to Harveys today and ordered this which is the one I linked to above. In blackberry, which is a lot more open-weave than it looks online, but it is very comfortable and I got it 20% off as a BH sale. I'd forgotten which sofa I'd been looking at online so it was serendipitous that I bought the one I liked! This one will go along the side wall, as it's 155cm.

I might move the 'corner' sofa to the back wall - it will make a 3seater if I remove the 'chaise' bit (really just remove the footstool and rejig the cushion) until I can afford another new sofa.

I also ordered this rug which picks up the colours in the painting and my cushions amazingly.

I hope it'll look at bit warmer and more welcoming - and work better with guests when they come. I just need a fantastic lamp or light in the corner to create 'ambience' Grin
